IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC LIPS FOR WOODEN PAILS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,935, dated February 16, 1875; application filed May 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ST. CLAIR D. KIRTLEY, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Lip for Bucket-s, 850., of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to facilitate the pouring of fluids from wooden vessels, such as buckets and tubs, by attaching to the edge thereof a sheet-metal lip, A, bent and flanged as fully described hereafter, and as illustrated by the perspective View, Figure l,
transverse section, Fig. 2, and edge View, Fig.
3, of the accompanying drawing, Fig. 4 being a perspective view of a bucket with the lip attached.
The lip is formed by appropriate dies from a blank punched from a sheet of tinned iron or other sheet metal and consists ofa horizontal or nearly horizontal portion,'a, bent upward at its outer edge so as to form two curved flanges, b I), and downward at a point midway between these flanges, so as to form the lips proper (I, while at its inner edge the said horizontal portion a is bent downward into a vertical flange, f, curved throughout to conform to the shape of the bucket or tub to which the lip is to be attached.
The lip is secured to the edge of the bucket or tub by small nails or screws passed through holes h, formed for the purpose in the flange f; the latter possessing sufficient inherent elasticity to permit it to be fitted snugly against the curved surface of the vessel, so as to prevent leakage of fluid between the latter and the lip.
The bending and flanging of the lip in the manner above described, not only adapts it especially for the purpose for which it is illtended, but so strengthens and stiffens the said lip as to enable it to Withstand any ordinary usage to which it may be subjected.
I do not claim, broadly, a metal lip adapted for attachment to a bucket but I claim- The lip A, bent to form the horizontal portion a, flanges I) b, and central channel d, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ST. CLAIR D. KIRTLEY.
