IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,9 [4, dated February 16, 1875; application filed April 6, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL A. FLUMMER- FELT, of Delaware Station, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof.

My invention relates to awashing-machine; and consists of a tub, a beater, and a spring interposed between the beater and bottom of the tub, whereby the binding of the rods to which the beater is secured and clogging between the beater and bottom of the tub are prevented.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the tub or box, and B the beater, bothof which may be of pyramidal form. The sides 0 of the beater are slatted and connected to end pieces, to whose top cross-bar D are secured horizontally -'extending rods H, which pass through openings in the side A of the tub, and have attached to them the operating-handle G. Blocks J are secured to the inner sides of the tub, and have curved faces, which overha'n g, as at K. L represents a spring, which is interposed between the bottom of the beater and the tub, and the beater reciprocates thereon. The clothes are placed in the tub between the beater and blocks J, and subjected to beating .or pounding operations due to the movements of the beater, the construction of the blocks causing overturning of the clothes, and the water dashing from one side of the tub to the other through the slatted sides of the beater.

During the movements of the beater the spring L affords a smooth bearing for the beater, and prevents clogging between the tub and bottom of the beater, since the latter is somewhat elevated from the bottom of the tub. In the event of clogging between the beater and spring, the latter yields, and thus prevents strain on the rods H, and overcomes binding thereof with the side A of the tub.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim ,as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a washing-machine provided with a reciprocating beater, the combination, with the tub A and beater B, of the spring L, interposed between the beater and the bottom of the tub, whereby the binding of the rods H and clogging between the beater and bottom of the tub are prevented, as set forth.
