Description

Sept. 7 1926. 1,599,048
l. B. HANSEN SPIRIT LEVEL Filed Feb. 7 1925 gwuento'v Patented Sept. 7, 1926.
UNITED STATES IVER B. HANSEN, OF GOLDENDALE, WASHINGTON.
SPIRIT LEVEL.
Application filed February 7, 1925. Serial No. 7,579.
The present invention relates to a spirit level and the object thereof is to provide a novel, simple, economical, strong, and durable spirit level, particularly designed for making both horizontal and vertical adjustments of different structures and stlll more particularly designed for forming corners of buildings, posts, and other structures.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a spirit level which Is efficient, reliable in operation, not liable to readily get out of order, easy to assemble and disassemble, and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevatlon of the spirit level, embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the central portion thereof.
Figure 3 is a transverse section, taken therethrough substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the spirlt level, showing the same applied to the corner of a structure.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 1 designates the body, which is in the form of a parallelepiped, the lower edge of which is rovided with an angular channel 2, extendlng longitudinally thereof and having its two walls perpendicularly disposed to each other, as is clearly shown in both Figures 3 and 4, in order that this edge of the body may be applied to the corner of a structure, such as a building for plumbing the same. This channel is also useful in levelling shafting, for making both horizontal and vertical adjustments.
The body is provided preferably with a plurality of grip slots 3, extending longitudinally thereof. In the present modification of the invention, there are three cylindrical openings 4, passing transversely through the body from side to side, and each of these openings form a chamber for receiving the spirit level vial casing. Each of these casings include a cylindrical body 5,
having at one end a flange 6, for abutting one side of the body and held in engagement therewith by screws'7 or other suitable fastening elements, passing through suitable enlargements 8, formed on the flange. A pair of diametrically opposed blocks 9 radiate inwardly from the body 5, and have arcuate grooves 10, formed therein, at their inner ends. A vial 11 is supported in these blocks 9 and consists of two concavo-convex sides connected by a rim of circular construction, so that the concave sides face each other. Two right angularly disposed cross hairs 12 are mounted in the usual manner on each side of the vial extending diametrically of the rim thereof, so as to cross each other at the center of the side. An annular shoulder 13 is provided interiorly of the body 5, adjacent the flange 6, and holds the transparent plate 14, against shoulder 15 formed in the body 5. A similar shoulder 16 is formed at the other end of the body and a transparent plate 17 is held thereagainst' by a ring 18, held on the side of the body opposite to that to which is fixed flange 6 by fastening element 19 or by any other suitable means. ter of the body 1 is disposed to extend longitudinally therewith, while the vials at the ends of the body are disposed to extend transversely thereof, a feature which is clearly shown in Figure 1. This arrangement,
of course, may be varied, if so desired, but
has been disclosed in this specific form, because I have found it to be the most desirable from actual experience. It is to be noted, particularly from a consideration of Figure 3, that the general parallelepiped formation of the body is varied by enlarging the body in its transverse width at the channelled edge thereof. This is provided, in order that a deeper and larger channel may be formed, but is not an essential feature of the invention.
In the enlargements 8, arcuate slots are provided in order that the screw 7 may be oosened and the body 5 rotated to change the angle of the vial as may be desired.
It will be apparent from the above detailed description that I have provided an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, which attains all of the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, in the statement, and the above'deseription of the invention, and that numerous changes in the details of construction, in the materials, in
The vial, at the centhe dimensions, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A spirit level including an elongated body having an opening extending transversely thereof, a cylindrical casing in said opening, a pair of diametrically opposed blocks radiating inwardly from the casing, and having at their inner terminals arcuate channels extending substantially longitudinal with the axis of the casing, a vial comprising concavo-convex sides with their concaved faces toward each other and a rim holding the sides spaced from each other, said rim being received in the arcuate channels of the blocks so that the axis of the casing passes diametrically across therim, a pair of transparent plates, one disposed in each end of the casing, and means for holding the plates in the casing with their centers abutting the rim at diametrically 0pposite points.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
IVER B. HANSEN.
