Description

Sept. 7 1926. v 1,598,628
J. H. WALKER, JR
HOOD
Filed Sept. 10, 1925 .vide a novel and improved device of general character Patented Sept. 7, 1926.
UNITE srA'rEs rarsnr orrics JAMES HENRY WALKER, JR., OF GRIFFIN, GEORGIA.
HOOD.
Application filed September 10, 1923.
connection with spraying apparatus of a character disclosed. in my pending application Serial No. 572,202 tiled July 1, 1922, and it is an object of the invention to pro this provided with aiswabbing medium together with means whereby said swabbing medium will be thoroughly saturated by a liquid destructive to insect life.
Another object device of this general character wherein a spraying nozzle 18 arranged therein together with swabbing elements positioned within the hood and carried thereby and substantially housing the nozzle so that said elements will be saturated by the liquid delivered from the nozzle.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hood whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a View in perspective illustrating a hood constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
F igure3 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein disclosed;
.Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken through the device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, the hood H comprises an elongated member of sheet metal, said member belng in cross section substantially in the form of an inverted U and at the central portion of its top is provided with a. relatively large opening 1 whereby visual access may be had to of the invention toprovide a novel and improved Serial No. 661,993.
the nozzle 2 arranged within the hood H,
said nozzle 2 being preferably of a whirling type. The nozzle 2 as herein disclosed is carried by a pipe section 3 disposed through a strip 4 secured to the hood H and bridgf ing the opening 1. The pipe section 3 is adapted for communication with a suitable source of liquid destructive to insect life.
The top portion of the hood H is maintained substantially rigid through the instrumentality of the straps 5 secured to the inner face thereof at opposite sides of the opening 1, said straps terminating a pronounced distance above the lower marginal portions of the hood so that said lower portions are capable of flexure in a lateral direction in order to readily compensate for plants of various widths. I
The hood H is also provided at its central portion with the inwardly directed elongated strips 6 of absorbent material and which provide swabbing elements to effectively apply to the plants as the hood passes thereover, the li uid absorbed by said strips after being disc arged from the nozzle 2. It is to be noted that the strips 6 are so arranged as to substantially house the nozzle 2 whereby is assured the proper saturation of the strips 6 by the liquid discharged from the nozzle 2.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hood con structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of. the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A spraying device comprising an elongated hood substantially in the form of an inverted U in cross section, the central portion of'the top of the hood being provided with an opening, a strip carried by the hood and disposed across said opening, a spray nozzle within the hood and carried by the strip, and inwardly disposed swabbing members within the hood and carried by the side and top walls of the hood, said members being arranged fore and aft of the nozzle.
2; A spraying device comprising an elongated hood substantially in the form of an inverted U in cross section, the central portion of the top of the hood being provided with an opening, a strip carried by the hood and disposed across said opening, a spray nozzle within the hood and carried by the strip, inwardly disposed swabbing members within the hood and carried by the side andtop' walls of the hood, said members beingarranged fore and aft of the nozzle, and
= transversely disposed straps secured to the inner face of the top of the hood fore and aft of the opening to give rigidity to said top portion of the hood.
[nozzle within the 3. A spraying device comprising an elongated hood substantially in the form of an inverted U in cross section, the central portion of the top of the hood being provided with an opening, a strip carried by the hood anddisposed across said opening, a spray hood and carried by the strip, inwardly disposed swabbing members within the hoodand carried by the side and top walls of the hood, said members being arranged in a plurality of series spaced lengthwise of the hood and extending fore and aft of the nozzle, the members of each series being disposed across the top of the hood and down the sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
