This invention relates to improvements in article attaching clips, and has particular reference with respect to its cooperation upon a comb.

' :6 The primary object of this invention is the provision of an attaching clip which may be used in novel manner for cooperation with an article to support the article in a pocket, or on the flap of a garment or, in other convenient location.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a novel type of attaching clip including improved means for connecting the same to a comb or other article to secure thesame in a definite posit-ion thereon against liability of accidental relative movement with respect to the article.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the improved clip, which is adapted for attachment upon a special type of comb B, although the clip may be used on other articles than combs, such as pencils, pens, etc.

The improved clip A is preferably of resilient material, preferably metal, and the same includes the resilient clip sleeve 10, to which the attaching prong 11 is yields-lily $0 connected, as by an integral connection. The sleeve is of course preferably circular or cylindrical in formation, and the same is hollow to provide the passageway 18 adapted to receive the shank ofa pen or pencil or the shank 20 of the artic'le B thereof. it is preferred to make the wings 16 and 17 as light as possible, and to this end the central part of the material thereof is 25, the wings thus leaving a substantially rectangular shaped framework defining the shape of the wings 16 and 17. This indentation or projection '30 is preferably stamped directly in the metal as shown in Figure 3, although the same may be cast to provide the projection. Referring to the assembly of the clip upon the comb shank, as is illustrated in the drawing, the split sleeve 10 is of course slipped over the shank 20 from the top thereof; the shank 20 preferably being smooth at its exterior surface, unencumbered by any projection tending to obstruct the sleeve, and the shank 2O terminates at the extension portion at) of the back to provide a shoul der 414* against which the lower edge of the sleeve may abut. The split sleeve 10 is so slipped upon the shank 20 that its projection 30 extending into the passageway 18 will slip into one of the recesses 43 or a l provided therefor, and in this relation when the projection is so extended into the recess as or 4d, the attaching tongue 11 lies along a side surface of the back 35 of the comb B, due to the positioning of the indentations or recesses 43 and L4 in alignment with the side surfaces of the back of the comb. Of course, the sleeve wings 16 and 17 resiliently grip the shank 20 in snug engagement, and thus holds the projection in place in its recess. The clip A may be readily detached from the article B, as by pushing upwardly on the shank 20, and in this respect the upper clip of the projection 30 is tapered, as shown at in Figure 3 of the drawing, which engages a tapered upper edge of the recess or 44-, to facilitate the clip removal.

This is important, since it may be desirable to have the teeth face in a desired direction with respect to the placement of the comb and clip on the garment of a wearer.

Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts of the comb and clip may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. As an article of manufacture an attaching clip for supporting articles com- 'irisinga resilient split sleeve having an attaching tongue extending outwardly from an end thereof and having a passageway therethrough, an elongated projection car ried by the sleeve extending into the passageway thereof in aligning relation with said tongue, said projection having the upper end thereof facing away from said tongue tapering toward the inner surface of the sleeve. I

2. As an article of manufacture a metal clip for supporting articles comprising a resilient split sleeve portion of substantially cylindrical formation having a passageway therethrough, a tongue yieldably connected integral with the split sleeve portion and extending beyond an end thereof and at apoint diametrically opposed from the split end of said sleeve, said split sleeve having a projc on extending into the passageway thereof elongated in alignn'ient with the tongue of said clip at a point diametrically opposed to the split of said sleeve.

3. as an article of manufacture a metal clip for supporting articles comprising a resilient solit sleeve portion of substantially cylindrical formation having a passageway th ethrou h, a tongue yieldably connected inte ral with the split sleeve portion at an end thereof and at a point diametrically opposed from the split end of-said sleeve, said split sleeve having a projection extending into the passageway hereof elongated in alignment with the tongue of said clip at a point diametrically opposed to the split of said sleeve, said split sleeve in the portions lying between the split thereof and the attaching prong having openings therethrough.

4-. In a combined comb and clip the combination of a comb including a portion having elongated recesses at opposite sides thereof, and a detachable sleeve having a passageway therein adapted to receive the portion of the comb in which said recesses are formed, said sleeve having an elongated projection extending into said passageway for seating in selective manner in any one of the recesses of the comb, and a tongue carried by said sleeve in cooperative clamping relation with said comb.

5. In a combined comb and clip the combination of a comb including a back portion having teeth thereon and an extended shank projecting beyond an end of said back, said shank having an elongated recess therein aligning with the back of said comb. and a clip including a split sleeve portion and an attaching shank, said split sleeve portion having a passageway therein adapted to receive the shank of the comb and said split sleeve portion having a projection extending into the passageway of elongated formation for seating in the recess of said shank.

6. In a combined comb and clip the combination of a comb including a back having teeth carried thereby, said comb at one end thereof having an extension shank provided with oppositely disposed recesses in alignment with the opposite sides of said comb, and a clip including a split sleeve portion having a passageway therein adapted to receive the top shank, said split sleeve portion having a projection extending into the passageway for seating in selective manner essee? in either of the recesses of said shank, and

an attaching tongue carried by said clip in cooperative; extending relation along a side of the comb.

7. In a combined comb and clip the combination of a comb including an end shank having a recess inwardly ot a side thereof, a detachable sleeve for said shank having a passageway therein adapted to receive the shank of. the comb, said sleeve having a projection extending into said passageway dapted to detachably in snug relation in the recess of the shank 01? said comb to prevent any relative accidental movement of the sleeve upon the shank either rotary longitudinal moven'ient thereon, and a tongue carried by the sleeve so as to extend into clamping relation with the comb.

8. In a combined comb and clip the combination of a comb including a back having oppositely disposed sides with teeth extending outwardly from an edge of the back. said back integral therewith and extending beyond the teeth at the end of the back having a substantially cylindrical shaped shank provided with a lateral indentation there in, a detachable split sleeve for the cylindrical shank and having a passageway therethrough and a projection extending into the passageway adapted toseat in the indentation of the comb shank, and a tongue carried by the sleeve in such relation therewith and with respect to the projection 01 the sleeve that when the said pro ection seats in the indentation of the comb shank said tongue will lie along a side ot the comb back into clamping relation therewith.

9. As an article of manutactinfe an at taching clip for supporting articles comprising a split sleeve having a clamping tongue extending outwardly from one end thereof, said sleeve having a passageway therethrough, and an elongated projection carried by the sleeve extending inwardly ot the passageway thereof, the same being of greatest depth at its end opposite to the end of the sleeve from which the tongue extends and from there tapering in depth to its opposite end where it merges into the sleeve.

10. In a combined article and clip the combination of an article having an attaching shank thereon, and a clip comprising a split sleeve for slipping over the attaching shank having a tongue adapted to rest againstthe article the tongue extending outwardly from one end of the split sleeve, said attaching shank of the article having a shallow elongated recess therein with blunt edges, and the sleeve inwardly thereof having an elongated projection with blunt tapering edges adapted to slidably and detachably enter and be disconnected with the indenta tion of said shank merely by slipping of the sleeve longitudinally with respect to said shank.

11. In a. combined article and clip the combination of an article having a shank portion thereon provided with an elongated shallow indentation formed with tapering surfaces bluntly merging into the outer surfaces of the shank, and a clip including a split sleeve slidable upon the shank in a frictional engagement therewith having a resilient tongue extending outwardly from one end of the sleeve, said sleeve having an elongated shallow projection extending into the same for seating in said indentation of the shank. said projection having blunt edges tapering into merging relation with the terior oi": the sleeve whereby the sleeve may he readilyslid upon and off the shank to seat the projection in the indentation of the shank merely by relative movement of the split sleeve longitudinally of the shank, said projection being adapted to snugly seat in the indentation of the shank to prevent normal rotational movement and longitudinal movement of the split sleeve with respect to said shank.
