w. FAERQHILD PLASTER BASE FOR COLUMNS Filed June 193g 'WALTER H. FAZRGHILD, CECE-G.
PLASTER. BASE FOE GGLUMN'S.
Application June 3.0, L322; Serial No. 5713559.
The invention. relates to plaster bases. for columns and its object is to provide an improved base :hicli comprises a suitable sheeting and a reinforcement or lathon the face -thcreof which may be flexedto form the sides of a column and in which provision is made for continuous reinforcement of the plaster or stucco on'thebase.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by the claim at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: F l is a perspective of a structure embodying the invention, parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a hori zontal section. F 3 is a vertical section showing the manner in which the sheets of the base may be built up to form a column. 4: is perspective of one of the sheets of the base before it is folded to extend around a post.
The invention is exemplified in a plaster base for a column which is formed of sheets each comprising a backing sheet and a sheet of woven wire mesh or fabric consisting longitudinal strips of wire 11 connected by strips of wire 12 woven obliquely hack and forth between and wrappedaround strips 11 to form a suitable mesh which is adapted to retain plaster and also to serve as a reinforcement for the wall when embedded in the plaster. The backing preferably comprises a back liner or facing 7, a liner 8, an intermediate corrugated sheet 9 and a corrugated sheet 10 secured to the front face of liner 8. These liners and corrugated sheets are all formed of paper permanently secured together to form a stiff double faced corrugated board with a cor rugated plaster-face which is waterproofed by immersing it in a suitable solution of asphaltum after or before the liners and corrugated sheets have been united by a suitable adhesive.
lhe woven wire fabric extends over the face of the backing formed by the corrugated sheet 10 and is secured to the backing by staples 20 which extend through the backing and around the meshes of the fabric, to secure them for convenience in handling the composite sheets and so that they may be applied as a unit in the construction of a column. The wire fabric extends over the front face of a sheet of backing beyond one of its longitudinal, walls, as at 1 7, and er: tends beyond. its side margins, as 18., A sheetof the complete base is then folded or creased to form. thesidesof the column. and so that the side margins. will. abut or. be cont-iguo-usto one another and: will. lap the usual post 21in the column The margins of the, base are securedItothe post 91 16. The sheets, after being creased and folded into rectangular shape, are secured to the posts in vertical series to continue the column as high as desired.
As a result of providing each sheet of the base, before it is folded, with woven fabric which extends beyond one of its longi tudinal margins, the upper margins of the fabric on one sheet will overlap the lower margin of a vertically contiguous sheet, so that the sheets of fabric will collectively form a vertically continuous or uninterrupted reinforcement for the plaster or stucco applied to the base. As a result of the projecting portions 18 at the side margins of each sheet, the abutting margins adjacent the vertical joint will overlap and form horizontally continuous reinforcement for the plaster or stucco. By providing sheets of the plaster base with these projecting marginal portions of fabric or mesh, they will constitute a vertically and laterally continuous reinforcement for plaster or stucco throughout the entire area of the column wall which will effectively prevent cracking of the plaster or stucco at the joints between the sheets.
The invention exemplifies a plaster base in sheet form for a column which is composed of a backing sheet of lathe-r fabric which will continuously reinforce the plaster or stucco applied to the backing to prevent cracking or disruption of the plasterer stucco and which may be folded around the post. I
In use, the composite sheets, comprising the double faced, waterproof, corrugated board stapled to the wire mesh, will be used to form sections of the base. A section will first be folded or creased and then wrapped around a column or post and the projecting wire sideedges l8 overlapped and stapled to one side of the post, as shown in Fig. 2. As shown, the section itself is folded around the post with a space on three sides, the fourth being secured against one by staplesof the faces of the post, so as to make the complete plastered column as large in horizontal section as may be desired. If desired, the sheet section may fit snugly around the post. 7
After the first section has been folded and stapled into place, other sections may be added on top by interlocking the projecting top Wire edge 1.7 of the lower section With the lower edge of the added section. This will form a vertical continuous reinforcement for the plaster which may be built as high as may be desired by the addition of more sections, and one which Will prevent the cracking; of the plaster at the point between the sections.
The invention is notto be understood as restricted to the details setforth, since these maybe modified within the scope of the appended claim, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: t Y
A plaster base for columns in sheet form composed of a water-proof backing sheet and a metallic lath secured to the outer face thereof, said base being flexible to permit it to be folded horizontally around a columm the lath extending vertically beyond one of the horizontal marginsof the sheet to form an extension around the column to receive the contiguous horizontal margin of the ad joining base.
Signedat Chicago, Illinois, this 13th day of June, 1922.
