IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,761, dated February 16, 1875; application filed January 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. HUGHES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective View of the body-loop.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and efficient method of attaching the coiled end of scroll-springs for childrens carriages to the body thereof. It consists in the employment of a body-loop, having an offset at its outer end, to receive one or more bolts through the upper end of the spring, whereby the latter is firmly secured to the body of the carriage without the necessity of the ordinary cross-bar heretofore required with this class of springs.
The body-loop B is preferably made about as shown in the drawings, being provided with an offset, as seen at a. This offset may be made to receive two bolts through the spring, as shown, or it may be made single, to receive but one. In addition to the arms 0 and i, a third might be employed, running laterally toward the opposite side of the body, if desired, for the purpose of more effectually resisting any side thrust; but this would scarcely be necessary in this class of carriages. The other portion of the spring is connected to the axle A, and to the body D, as heretofore practiced.
If desired, the upper portion of the spring might be formed like the common C-spring, and still dispense with the cross bar, by means of this style of body-loop.
What I claim as my invention is- Ina childs carriage or perambulator, the scroll-spring 0, having one end hung to the body D, and the other to the offset body-loop B, attached to the body 1), and the said spring 0 being fixed intermediately to the axle A, combined as and for the purpose set forth.
