IMPROVEMENT IN INKSTAND-COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,724, dated February 9, 16575; application led Drcember 8, 1874.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN N. WALLIS, of Auburn, Cayuga county, State of New York, and FRANK M. HARBAGH, of Wilkesbarre city, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstand-Oovers 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a self-adj usting cover for inkstands, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l represents a plan view, and Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section, of our cover on line x Fig. l.

A represents the cap or lid of an inkstand, which may be constructed in any of the known or usual ways, or in any desired manner, to tit the inkstand for which it is intended. In this cap are two round countersunk holes or openings, a a, the material between the openings forming, as it were, two inclined planes, b b, leading thereto. Over the center of the lip is a hood, B, extending over a little more than one-half of each opening, and open at both ends. In the center of the hood B is a short branch, C, the upper end of which is closed by a cap, D. Through this branch two balls, d d, are inserted, which fall down the inclined planes b b and close the openings a a.

' In inserting the pen in the inkstand, into either end of the hood B, the ball d is forced away from the opening a, allowing the pen to pass down, and .when the pen is withdrawn the ball at once rolls down the inclined plane and covers the opening, thus preventing evapl oration, as well as the molding of the ink and ingress of dust.

Around the holes a on the under side, at the edge, is a tongue or ring, i, of metal, rubber, or other suitable material, to prevent too much ink being retained on the pen.

By removing the cap D the balls may be taken ont for cleaning.

This inkstand-cover may be made of metal, glass, or any other suitable material, and may be attached to every style and size of inkstand.

1t will, of course, be understood that the cover may be constructed with only one opening, a, or with more than two, if desired, each opening having its ball.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the cover A, with openings a and inclined planes b, the hood-B, with branch O, having cap D, and the balls d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
