IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-FLAP FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,7] 7, dated February 9, 1875; application filed December 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHAUNGEY THOMAS and WILLIAM K. PARKER, both of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented Improvements in Carriage Boot or Flap Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to a carriage boot or flap fastening.
This invention is an improvement on Patent No. 147,861; and consists in a plate or spring to allow the eccentric lever or turning latch to yield and adapt itself to the thickness of the yoke, locking the parts, and preventing them from rattling; and also in a washer arranged about the stem of the latch to lock the latch in its open or closed adjustment.
Figure 1 represents a front view of our fastening connected with straps; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; and Figs. 3 and 4:, views of detached parts.
Our improved fastening consists of an ec centric lever-latch, B, having a pin or pivot, I), supported and adapted to turn in a plate, 0, the pivot extending also through a springplate, d, attached to the back of the plate 0, the end of the pivot having preferably beyond this spring-plate d a washer, c. This washer is attached to the pivot 11, and has struck or formed thereon a projection, f, to enter a groove, 9, in the spring-plate d. The loop A has an open eye to grasp or surround the eccentric lever-latch, and the loop A and the plate 0 have openings h 1; for the attachment of straps j. With the parts as shown in Fig. 1, the open loop is placed about the eccentric lever-latch, the handle of the latch being in the position shown in full lines. To secure the parts, the
handle is turned to the position shown in dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2, and in so doing the pin b is allowed to move in the direction of its length by reason of the elastic or spring plate d, connected with the plate 0. This enables the under surface of the eccentric lever-latch to bear firmly on the loop A, thus holding the parts firmly together, and preventing rattling. The small washer e at the end of the pin is provided with a raised projection, f, adapted to enter a groove, g, in the spring-plate d. This washer moves with the pin, and its projection enters the groove in the plate, when the handle of the eccentric lever is in either of the positions indicated, thus serving to lock the lever-latch in such positions. The groove might be made in the washer, and the projection on the plate.
We do not limit ourselves to the spring 01 as constructed, as any other suitable spring, might be used instead to keepthe eccentric latch held down.
Having described our invention, we claim- 1. The eccentric lever or turning latch, its supporting-plate, and spring-plate, combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The supporting-plate c, the spring-plate d, the washer e, and the lever-latch, all combined and operating substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the eccentric lever or turning latch, its supporting-plate, and spring-plate, of the open-eyed loop, all substantially as described.
