UNITED STATES PATENTJOFFICE. i
HIRAM DEAN MORRILL, OF NORTHFILD, VERMONT.
STONECHIPPING STRAIGHTEDG-E.
Application led October 15, 1923. Serial No. 668,578.
justed, it will remain of itself in position,
leaving both hands or" the stone-cuttergfree to handle the chipping tools. Y
These objects, together with certain'other `features ot' advantageV which .will appear more fully hereinafter, are secured in the device of the present invention.
As illustrative of the. principles of my invention, I shall show and describe a form ot straight edge which has been satisfactory in actual use and `well -adapted'to Vthe requirements oi' manufacture. Throughout the specification and drawings like reference f characters are correspondingly employed,
and in the drawings 1 Fig. 1 is a plan view of a stone chipping straight edge in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the adjustable Vclamping head of the device.
I have indicated at 1 a straight edge member having between its ends a longitudinal series of spacedv holes 2 therein, and provided at one end with a cross pin 3 and at its opposite end with an Lip-turned flange 4 to the inner face of which is `fast a protective strip 5 of lead or like substance which will not scratch or otherwise mar the polished surface of the stone.
Adjustable longitudinally along the straight edge 1 is a clamping head 6 having a longitudinal chamber 7 within which is splined at 8 an internally threaded sleeve 9 through which extends a threaded stem .10. The outer end of the sleeve 9 is provided with a relatively soft bearing 11 of dead or the like adapted to be set against the :tace of the stone to be chipped. At its opposite end, the stem 10 is provided with a hand wheel 12 by means of which it may be rotated to advance and retract the sleeve 9, indicated in full and dotted lines Fig. 3.
The head is provided with a longitudii nal slot 13 through which the straight .edge j member 1 passes. The adjustment of the head 6'. on member 1 is held by a locking:V
In use, the bar 1 is laid Vover the stonel to indicate the line along which the stone is yto be chipped with the bent end 4 hooked overthe face of the stone and the. head ,6 adjusted along said bar to bring the clamping nose 11 as closely as possible to the; op- .80...
posite face of the stone. The rough adjust-` ment is held by the engagement ot the rlockliong stem 14 in the proper opening 2 of the The fine adjustment is had by rotating the stem 10 to project the sleeve 9 out of the head 6 until its bearing portion 11 abuts the stone, as vindicated in dotted lines Fig. 3. The straight edge is now clamped in proper' gaging position upon the stone and will of itself remain in such position until intentionally released.
Various modifications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention it-Within the limits of the appended claims.
l/Vhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. In a device of the class described, a straight edge having an upturned bearing at one end, an elongated head adjustable longitudinally alongsaid straight edge towards and from said` upturned bearing end, a bearing element adjustable longitudinally of said head towards and from said upturned bearing end of the straight edge, means whereby said bearing element may be adjusted relative to said head, and a pull stem carried byl said head andy adapted for locking engagemally urging said stem into locking engagement, and a handle for withdrawing said -stem against the action of said spring.
2. In a device of the class described, a straight edge having a longitudinal series of spaced holes therein having an npturned bearing at one end, an elongatedheadhaving a longitudinal slot therein through which said straight edgeextends andadjust- ,j
ablelongitudinally along said` straight edge towards and from said uptnrnedslbearing end, .and having a longitudinally disposed chamber, a bearing element adjustable longitudinally of said'chamber towards andv from saidnpturned bearing end. of the straight edge,l means whereby said bearing lelementy may be adjnstedrelative to` said head, and
means/carried by said head andadapted forr selective engagementin said openings of the straight edge to yreleasably tix the position of saidhead on said straight edge. v Y
Bplfn a device of the ,class described, 'a'
straight edge having an.v` uptnrned'- bearing at one end, an elongated head having alv lonlgitudinal slot therein lthrough Vwhich saidstraight edge extends and j adjustable .longi-A tudinally along said straightedge towards and from said upturned bearing end, and
having a longitudinally disposed chamben; a sleeve shdable in said chamber and having a.' bearing element at its outer end opposing said uptnrned bearing end of the straight edge, a threaded stem for adjusting? said.
sleeve in said head towards and Jfrom said upturned bearing end, and releasable means carried by said head for fixing the position for fixing thefpositi'on of said carrier on said straight edge comprising a pull stem mounted `on saidcarrier and adapted for selective locking engagement in said openings ofthe straight edge, aspring normally urging'said steml into locking engagement,
and a handle for withdrawing said stem againstthe actionof said spring. e
5. In a device of the class. described, a straight edge member, a relatively stationary bearingelement at one `end of said member7 an elongated head adjustable longitudinallyy along said straight edgeandhaving a longitndinallyV extending chamber,
head for adjusting said sleeve towards and from said stationary bearing element indevpendently ot the adjustment of said head along said straight edge, and means carried by said headV and adapted for releasableJ clampingV engagement with said straight edge lor .tixingfthe position of said head .on said straight edge.
In testimony whereof Iy aiiix my signature.
