SUSPENDED SCAFFOLD.
Application filed May 4,
This invention relates to 'improvements in scaffolds and more particularly to a Scaffold designed to be suspended upon a bill board to support a sign painter or bill poster. v
One of the objects of the present 1nvention is to provide a scaold which maybe readily erected and supported solely by the bill board and which, when properly suspended will be firmly Supported in place so that a sign painter or bill poster may con- ,veniently reach all portions of the surface of the bill board.
Another object of the invention is to provide a Yscaffold for the purpose Stated embodying a minimum number of parts so that there will be practically no obstruction `of the surface of the bill board, thereby permitting the sign painter or bill poster to work without interference on the part of the scaffold.
Another object of the invention is to provide a scaffold for the purpose stated soy Aconstructed that it may be quickly and conveniently mounted upon any standard co'n struction of bill board and adjusted longitudinally thereof without any readjustment of the parts so that by a mere shifting of the scaffold structure the lworkman may conveniently paint upon or apply posters to the selected area portion of the bill board.
Another object of the invention is to provide a scaffold for the purpose stated, so constructed that it may be readily mounted upon a bill board and dismounted and, when dismounted, may be compactly arranged for transportation.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the scaffold that it may be adjusted to support a workman at different elevations, depending upon the height of the bill board.
In the accompanying drawings :e
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the scaffold embodying the present invention mounted upon a bill board.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The scaffold comprises a pair of suspension members indicated ingeneral by the numeral 1 and each of these members vcom- 1225. serial No. 27,905.
.prises a-tubular upright 2 whichis preferably of a length approximating the height of an ordinarybill board. The vupper end of each vupright is flattened and bent as at 3 to form ai suspension hook 4, which eX- tends substantially `rat right angles rear' wardly from the upper Aend of the upright and is of a length substantially equal to the width of the upper Aside of the ordinary bill board, the hook terminating in a downvv'ardly Vturned end portion 5 which is de. signed to engage behindy the top of the bill board, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, so that the upright 2 is suspended in vertical position in front of the bill board7 the bill board being indicated inv i general by the numeral 6. lt will be evident by reference to Figure 2, that the upright vis suspended substantially in parallelism to the face of the bill board. Y
The supporting uprights 2 are designed to support a platform board which is indicated by the numeral 8, and for this purposeth e uprights 2 are provided with sup port-ingarms which are indicated in general vby the numeral 9 and which will now be described. Each of the supporting arms 9 preferably comprises a tubular arm member 10 which is pivotally mounted at one end, by a bolt 11, between the spaced members 12 .of a yoke 13 which is disposed to embrace the supporting upright 2, the bight of the yoke snugly fitting the said upright. A bolt A111: is secured through the bight portion of the yoke 13 and is fitted through one or another of a series of openings 15 formed in the opposite sides of the tubular upright 2, the yoke being adapted, in this manner, to be supported at various positions of elevation upon the respective upright. By pivotally connecting the arms 10 with the yokes 13, the arms are adapted to assume the horizontal supporting position shown in the drawings, when the scaffold is in use or, when the scaffold is being transported from place to place, may be folded to lie beside the respective uprights and, therefore, occupy but little space and render the structure more compact. In order to Support the arms lO in horizontal position, a chain or other flexible supporting element 16 is connected at its lower end as at 17, to the outer end of each arm and at its upper end is connected to an eye boltl 18 which is fitted interchangeably in openings 19 formed in the supporting uprights 2, nuts 20 being threaded upon the Shanks of the eye bolts to secure the same in place. lt will be understood at this point that the arms 9 may be adjusted upon the uprights to .assume different positions of elevationby removing' the bolts ifi and vertically adjusting the yokes 13 upon the respective uprights and replacing the bolts, and aitert'his adjust# nient has .been effected, the eye bolts 18 will be 'correspoi j idjnfs the chains vor other ilexib e supporting` elements are tauft, tlie-.arms l() Will Ventend horizontally o i' vfright angles from the upright The om m 'board 8 is-either in tlieiorm g board or may be made up of two or `more boards suitably assembled and secured together. v ri, pair oi cleats 2l is secured to the under side ot the platform board `or near each end thereo'lI and the cleats oi Teach pair are so spaced that they Will approximately engage against the op- `posite sides of the supporting arm l0 upon which the Correspending` end ot the platform board is disposed, the board being, in this manner, not only supported y the ari; 'l0 l ut being' likewise Aheld againstlongitudinal displacement and the suspending members being likewise held 'ag/a' 'i relative displace ment.
From the foregoing description oi' theinvention, it will be understood that in the use ot the scaffold vthe suspension members are engaged at their hooked vupper ends over the upper edge of the bill board upon which painting` vis to be done or postersl applied, and, after theA arms l0 have been properly positioned, the platform board 8 is disposed ted so that when Vever. i
at its end portions upon the supporting arms l0 andvvill then constitute ay support 'for thewvorliman. lt Will also be evident that the application of the scaffold to the bill board' andits removal therefrom does not in any Way-mar or injure the board and the application and removal oi' the scaiiold may di-'ly andfquiclrly accomplished Without the employment of any tools Whatsolt will false. be epident {tlf-at vthe strucis exception l substantial although in construcn and, jin Weight ort such clima-actor' -tliat its ,presence upon'the board does not in any Way in er- `.tere iwith :the lab'oi'sy oi: the painter or'bill It will `also be'efv'ident `that. the
