. REST.
Application filed March 12, 1924. Serial No. 698,767.
This invention has to do with a-res t particularly useful-as a head rest, and it is an object of the invention to provide a simple, effective and convenient rest of the character herein set forth.
h Eypresent invention provides a support or rest, particularlyuseful as head rest, to be used by a person while reclining, while working under automobile, or in a lilre situation, etc. C An object of my invention is. to provide a rest which is effective, convenient and cornfortable.
'rlnother object of my invention is to provide a rest which is collapsible into small, convenient and compact form so that it can be easily and conveniently handled and transported. I
Another. object of my invention is to provide a collapsible rest: which is simple and inexpensive of construction, and which is particularly simple and convenient to operate. I I The variousobjects and features of, my invention will be best and more fully understood fromthe following detaileddescription of a typical preferred form of my invention, throughout which description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 11s a perspective view showing the rest collapsed or folded;
, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the rest showing it in operative position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed sectional view of a portion of the rest, showing the parts in the position in which they are illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. l is a view taken as indicated by the line on Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the rest,showing it in collapsed position.
The rest provided by my present inven-,
tion includes, generally, a base 10, a head supporting part or rest 11, supports 12 and 13, by which the rest is supported from the base, and braces l l for the supports.
The base includes a bottom 15, ends 16 which extend or turn upwardly at tne ends of the bottom, and sides or flanges 17 which extend upwardly from the side or longitudinal edges of the bottom. The ends are preferably curved or rounded off, in a manner such as I have illustrated in the draw- ;tween and connects the legs 25. v25 are spaced apart so that they will slidably fit between the flanges 17 of the base, and have their lower ends arranged between and pivotally connected to the flanges, by
ings. The base is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal so that it is without joints or seams. v
The supports 12 and 1 3 are connected to opposite ends of the base, and are; adapted to extend upwardly from the base and somewhat outwardly away from eachother, as
illustrated in the drawings.
The rest 11 has itsends connected to the upper end portions of the supports sot-hat it enter ls or is supported betweenthe upper portions of the supports. The rest is preferablyv formed of flexible material for instance, fabric, and is shaped and proportioned to suit the particular use to which the 1 device is to be put. I
The support 12 includes two spacedlegs 20, connected by a panel21. The legs '20 are spaced apart by the panel so that they Will slidably fit between the flanges 17 of the base. The lower ends of the legs extendbetween. the flanges 17, andarepivotally connected-to the flanges atpoints near the end of the base and close to the bottom or lower edges of the flanges. The legs may be connected with the flanges by pivot pins 22,
having their ends'riveted over so that they will remain in place. The panel 21, which preferably extends between the outer edges of the. legs, may be integral with the legs, and may be provided with an opening 23 for the purpose of reducing its weight. 1'.
rod 2 1- extends between the upper end portions of the legs to carry the end of the rest 11. .The rod is preferably screw threaded to the legs so that it is detachable to allow for removal of the rest. p
The support 13 is similar in construction to the support 12, and includes two spaced legs 25 and a panel 26 which extends be The legs nected near the outer edges of the flanges,
as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5- of the drawings. The panel 26 has inwardly turned or rounded end parts 28, similar to the ends 16 of the base. The panel 26 is shaped and proportioned so that it corresponds to the base, and will, when folded in, fit between the outer edge portions of the flanges to form a cover or closure for the base. A rod 30 extends between the legs 25 at a J point opposite the rods 24; to carry the other end of the rest 11. The rod 30 is preferably screw threaded to the legs 25 so that it is detachable to allow for removal of the rest.
The braces 14, which operate to hold the supports 12 and 13 in proper position, are folding braces, and when in position ex tend inwardly and downwardly from the supports to the base. Each brace includes an upper part A connected to the support, and a lower part B connected to the upper part B, and adated to engage the base. The upper part A includes two flangelike members 31 connected by a panel 32. The upper ends of the parts 31 fit between and are pivotally conne cte d by pivot pins tothe legs'of the panel. The lower part B includes two flangelike parts 34 connected bya panel 35. The upper ends of the parts '34: fit between and are pivotall-y connected by pivot pins 36 to the parts 31. The pivot pins 36 are located at points somewhat inward from the lower ends of the parts 31. The panels of the parts A and B are preferably provided with openings 35 The lower end of the lower part is adapted to engage the bottom of the base, the base being provided. with a recess or indentation 37 to' receive the lower ends of the two braces. The pivotal connection between the upper and lower parts of the brace allows the lower part to be folded upwardly in the direction indicated by the arrow D in Fig. 3, until it is within the upper part. The pivotal connectionof the upper part to the support allows it to be swung or folded inwardly as indicated by the arrow E in Fig. 3, until it is between the legs of the support. When the two parts of the brace are opened out and are moved past or over center, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the extreme outer or lower end of the upper part A engages the lower part to prevent further relative movement be tween the parts. When the braces are opened out past center, and have their lower ends arranged in engagement with the base, in the manner illustrated in the drawings, they form rigid and effective bracesfor the supports and operate to positively' prevent inward movement of the sup ports upon pressure being applied to the rest 11.
When the device is in use the supports are extended and the braces arra-ngedin place, as illustrated in Fig. 2 'of the drawings. When it "is desired to transport or store the device the braces are folded in by folding the lower parts B into the upper parts A .and the upper parts A into the supports. The support 12 is folded into position between the flanges 17 as ill ustrated in Fig. 5, and the support 13 is then folded in over the support 12 to the position illustrated in Fig. 5 When. thus folded the panel part 26 of the support 13 forms a closure for the base so that the entire device is contained within the base. A suitable catch device so may be provided for holding the support 13 in the folded position. l/Yhen the device is folded as just described, and as I have illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 of'the drawings, it is particularly neat and compact and is convenient to handle and carry. The costru-ction. of the device is light and strong so that the device is effective and durable and is at the same. time light and "easy to handle.
aving described only a typical; preferred form of my invention I do not wish to limit'niyself to the specific details hereinpear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claim:
Having described my invention, I 'claim': A device of the character described including a box like base having a bottom, ends, and sides, supports pivotally connected between the sides of the body'at opposite ends of the body one support being adapted to fold against the bottom and the other adaptedto fold over the one first mentioned and being in the form'of a closure for the base, a flexible rest connected between the outer parts of the supports, and braces for the supports each brace'ineluding, an upper part pivotally connected to the outer part of the support and adapted to fold against the support and a lower part pivotally connected to the upper part and adapted to fold up against the upper part.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th day of March, 1924.
GEORGE MATTH'Yss-EN.
