Description

W. A. KUHLMAN STRAP TIGHTENING AND HOLDING DEVICE Aug- 17 1926.
Filed Feb. 11, 1924 I y the openingt'i Patented Aug. 17, 1926 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
WILLIAM A. KUI-ILMAN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
STRAP TIGI'I'IENING AND HOLDING DEVICE.
This invention relates to adjustable fast- This invention has utility as a clamp for assembling and holding a binding strap or strip,
drawings buckle or as in assembling sections for concrete forms. Y I
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the invention as a fastener for concrete forms;
Fig. 2 is a plan buckle or View, with parts broken broken away In the assembly of as in connection w tures,
are built up g respond to the genera be formed.
of the buckle of Fig. 1 on an enlarged Fig. 3 is a side elevation-of the buckle of i'iig. 2, parts being and he device.
forms for poured struc-' ith concrete, panels enerally to standard sizes to l shape of the work to The columns may be round,
polygonal or other shapes. In the instance shown herewith there i shape. The p anel'is shown as c boards 1 assembled by panels are assembled to structure to be poured.
tie strips is desirableto have these panels clamped in assemb hold up when the concrete is pou these forms are only left into. Inasmuch as in position until the then removed,
1 may be had quickly sufficiently set and portant and conveniently.
that this remova Furthermore,
as these panels are re-used, it is may not mutilate the that the removal panels.
To this end the panels s taken a rectangular omprising 2. These define and hold the Asso grouped it bound or led relation to resist or red therepoured structure is it is iminasmuch, desirable as herein disclosed are assembled by strips or straps In dra iron brough position as an effective holding, t and clamping means. 7
prises fastener. having a plate l rising therefrom, 5 therein.
In bringing this plate 3, say of hoop iron, which may be of 51X- teen or eighteen gauge. hoop iron about the group desirable to have such wing this of panels it is t to a taut ightening,
herein disclosed conibuckle or into use the hoop iron 3 has portion 6 bent back on itself to provide a an ordinary nail o duced. By having loop 7 protruding through Into this 100137, a pin, as ike 8, may be intro n 6 of the may place a.
panels as extending through-the opening 5 and "back. along. the panel, this end. 6 is clamped by the under side of the strap against. the panel and there is minimized any tendency of this end of the strip to work loose fromthe base 4. i
Rising from this plate 1 of the main base is a pair of brackets 9 mergin toward the frame 5. These brackets have earing-providing openings 10 in is provided with a slot 12 through which may extend end portion 13. As threaded through the slot 12 this end portion 13 may even protrude through the slot 12 to have, bent over portion 14L. This threading of the end of the strap 3 into the slot 12 ofthe pin 11 may be as the pin 11 is thrust from one opening 10 to the other or' after the pin 11 has been inserted in both openings 10 as rising from the plate 4.. WVhen so assembled and with this end 13 of the strap 3'threaded therewith, its squarehead 15 engaged by a wrench or other tool, and turned to wind the strap 3 into taut. condition for effectively clamping; or binding the column panels-in as sembl'ed relation. The pin 11 may be keyed against removal from the base by nail 16 or other pin fastener through opening 17 to thereby serve as a key. In the winding of this strip 3 about the pin 11, if such winding be over the pin 1.1 instead of under, there is more positive holding action for this fastener into snug position against the panel. Openings 18 in the head 15 may receive pin or nail 19 of a length to engage the base 4 and hold the pin fromunwinding. The nail 16 may be of such length as not only to be used as key but to serve to prevent unwinding of the pin 11 by engaging the plate 4.
In the tightening of the strap 3 there is in many instances requirement for rather close clamping adjustment to be obtained with speed; To this end the head 15 of the pin 11 is provided with a ratchet portion 20 with which may be engaged by pawl 21 having trunnion 22 extending through opening 23 in one of the brackets 9. The operator finger on the pawl as the pinis being set up to'urge the pawl into a ratchet seat. Bythis means there is. close angular adjustment over a wide range for this pin 11. The trunnion 22 is of such size that by a stroke from a hammer it may be sentinto the pin 11 may have opening 0 with the keyQpin or nail held in openings while the lead intothe pin;11 (if the strip 3 261 Tilismeans that in the connections to thisdexzice such maybe at acorner or even threughslot or opening bridged by this de- 16 r fllhis' fastener may serveas a panel assembly ,for forms othenthan columns. Girder panels 27 have their open topportions sg iaced bybraces 28 an d the strap 3 withthis base i, 9, l0 and 11 connected for clamp assembly of such girder forms.
VJ hen the concrete has been poured into the structure and sutlicient time has elapsed lorthe desired set, it is only necessary for the workmen to come to :the device of this disclosure, knock out nails 8 and the device is at once free, as the strap 8 is thus loosened from the panels. The strap 3 may be discarded or it may be ,re-used as its condition may warrant, It is thus seen that there is disclosed herein a simple, effective and substantial fastener of ample tightening capacity which is capable of time saving use vin assembling and knocking down forms inconnection with poured structures.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Strap tightening and holding means.
including a base providing a plate portion ma be throu h the oaenin" 1,5ee,1ss
looped strap endheld in said seat by the strap, sa-id brackets providing bearings and a pin 'rotatablv mounted in said bearings for engaging the opposite end of the strap.
2. Strap tightening and holding means including a hase, a pin reversible end for end in said base for winding'in different directions as to said base, said pin having a seat for receiving a-strap end saidbase haw .ing bearings for said pin, and. checking means rernovably mountable withsaid base for swinging into pin engaging position, sa i d baseproviding one seat for the checking means with the pinmounted for-one direction of winding and alsecond seat for the chec ing means w ieirthe pin is mounted for ,IQB dir c fwindins- Strap tightening and holding means including a moun ng uni i emr i ins a e plate and a pair of opposing upstandbr'ackets, said unit having a slot for the looped vend of a strap, a pair of seatsgadjacent said slot, a rod through the looped cno resting in said seats, there being seats in the brackets parallel to said rod, a pin rotatably mounted the bracket seats for engaging the other end of v the strap, a ratchet fixed to the pin,a nd ratchet engaging means pivotally mounted on the bracket of said unit toward the base plate from said pin and between said pin and rod.
In witness whereof I atliz; my signature.
