DISH DRAINER.
Application filed July 1'7,
' and I have also provided a dish-supporting structure adapted to be extended over the sink when in vuse and to be folded within' the rcasing when not in use. Y
A further object of my invention relates to the provision of an auxiliary support or receptacle for small articles such as spoons or Cutlery.
ll/Iy invention further-relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularlyppointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of `my invention is shown in the dra-wings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved dish drainer in folded position;
Fig. 2 is a vside elevation of .the drainer extended in position for use, the casing being shownin section; and
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the drainer in the position shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, I have indicated a portion of a kitchen sink and a drain board or sink shelf 11. rlhe casing for my improved drainer preferably comprises a base having a lower wooden stiffening portion 12 and an upper protective layer of sheet metal 13 having a lip or depending projection 14 adapted to extend downward over the upper edge of the sink. The casing may be permanently secured in position on a sink shelf by one or more screws 15 extending through the bottom of the casing.
The casing` further comprises end portions 16 and a back 17 to which a cover 18 is hinged as shown in Fig. 2. The cover 18 is adapted to extend over and close the top and front side of the casing, covering the extensible portion of the dish drainer when the latter is not in use. The device thus presents a neat and attractive appearance and the parts are fully protected from dust and dirt.
t-supporting s fa sa siret tructure 'gil 1922, Serial No 575,540.
nected in pairs at their center points 21 and also' having their outer ends pivotally connected in alternate pairs at 22, the cross members thus vforming an extensible lazytongs structure. Each cross member has an upward extension 23 at one end with an inwardly projecting portion2t at its vupper end forming a hook for a purpose to be described At the outer end of the structure, an .end frame 25 is provided, having a seriesof cross bars 26. Side bars or supports 27 and 28 are pivvotally connected to upwardly extending portions 29 of the frame v25. The
bars k27 and 28 are turned downward at.
their free ends, as indicated at 30 and these downwardly extending portions 30 are received in loops or pockets 31 formed on the inner faces of the ends 16 of the casing. In this position the bars 27 and 28 support the hooks 24 of Vthe cross members 20.
When the device is to .be folded, the bars 27' and 28 are yunhooked from the loops 31 and are swung about their pivots 29. to a transverse orv cross-wise position, in which position rthey litlwithin the casing. "A center support 32 is provided for the cross bars 26. The lower portion of this support 32 is bent horizontally and is provided with an elongated slot 83 (Fig. 3) The support is pivoted at 21a to one pair of cross members 2O and the pivot 21b of a second pair of cross members extends through the slot 33.' The bars 26 are thus firmly supported while at the same time the parts may be folded when desired.
A wire brace 36 is secured to one of the outer cross members 20, as indicated in Fig. 3, and is provided with an adjustable foot 37 adapted to engage the bottom of the sink and to support the outer end of the extensible frame when the device is in use.
An auxiliary frame or holder is supported on a cross bar 39 (Fig. 3) which may be formed in a single piece with the wires forming the loops 31, this continuous piece of wire being secured to the ends 16 by solder or other convenient means. The aux'- iliary holder may consist of a pair of end wires 40 supporting a plurality of cross rods 4:1 forming a receptacle adapted to receive small articles such as knives, forks and spoons, while the larger articlesare supported in the extensible draner itself. I
A coil spring 42 ef relatively large coil taeter may be at the back 17 of the casing and at the other end to the movable end frame 25. This spring assists in returning the extensible frame to the casing after use and also affords a spacing support for dishes between its turns.
Having thus described my invention, the use and advantages thereof Will be readily apparent. When the device is not in use, the parts fold to the compact position shown in Fig. l and are fully protected by the cover 18.Y When in use, the parts are extended to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in Which the device is firmly supported by the brace 36 and the side bars 27 and 2S.
Having thus described my invention, l do not Wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but What I claim is l. A dish drainer having, in combination, a fixed casing and a horizontally disposed dish supporting structure supported at one end therein having` dish engaging' elements pivotally connected together, said structure being` extensible from said casing to operative position and being contractible to inoperative position, and said dish. engaging elements being foldable Within and protected by said easing When' not in use.
2. A dish drainer as set forth in claim l in which vertically adjustable means is provided on said dish supporting` structure to support the outer end thereof in raised position above the depressed bottom of a sink.
3. A dish drainer as set forth in claim l in Which said dis-engaging elements have upward projections at the ends thereof and in which means is provided to connect said upward projections to said casing.
l. A dish drainer having, in combination, a casing, an extensible dish-supporting structure foldable in said casing, said structure comprising pivotally connected cross members having upwardly and inwardly projecting ends, and side bars detacliably secured to the casing and supporting the inwardly projecting ends of said cross members.
5. A dish drainer having, in combination, a casing, an extensible dish wsupporting structure foldable in said casing and comprising a plurality of cross members pivotally connected together at their ends and centers in alternate pairs and each having a hook-shaped upivard extension at one end, and side bars engaging said extensions and detachably secured to said casing.
G. A dish drainer having, in combination, a casing, an extensible dish-supporting structure foldable in said casing, and an auxiliary article holder mounted in said casing and permanently supported above the folded position of said extensible structure.
7. A dish drainer having a casing, an extensible dish-supporting frame foldable in said casing, and a coil spring connected be'- tween said easing and an outer portion of the frame and eifective to space and support dishes on said frame.
In testimony whereof have hereunto affixed my signature.
CHARLES H. BERGLUND.
