The present invention relates to strainer nipples for water faucets, valves, and the like, such as are used for the fixtures of bath tubs, kitchen sinks, wash basins, barber shop shampoos, showers, and the like, and
the invention has for its object the provision of a simple and effective strainer nipple for attachment to the discharge outlet or nozzle of a faucet or valve in order to produce a smooth, gentle flow of water from the outlet or discharge nozzle, and to prevent the water from spraying or splashing objectionably in being discharged.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figur 1 is an elevation of one form of strainer nipple, showing the discharge nozzle or portion of the faucet or valve in section.
Figs. 2 and 3 are top and bottom plan views, respectively, of said nipple.
Fig. 4 is a diametrical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a diametrical section of another modification.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, the strainer nipple comprises the tubular body 10 of suitable metal, having the opening 11 therethrough, one end portion of the body being externally screw-threaded, as at 12, to screw into the internally threaded discharge nozzle or outlet portion 13 of a faucet or valve, the body 10 having a shoulder 14 at the base of the screw-threaded portion to abut the end of the nozzle or portion 13. The body 10 has the peripheral knurled band 15 in order to obtain a grip with the thumb and fingers of the hand in screwing the nipple into place and unscrewing same.

of the body is formed with an annular lip 19 which, after the disk is inserted into place, is bent or swaged inwardly to overlap the disk, thereby securely fastening the disk in place.
The strainer disk 16 will divide the stream of water into small jets flowing through the apertures, whereby to prevent the agitation and whirling of the water in passing through the discharge outlet of the faucet or valve, and this Will provide a smooth, gentle flow of the water through and from the outlet, without the water splashing or spraying objectionably in being discharged.
The lower or discharge end of the nipple is contracted or tapered, as at 20, in order that the area of the discharge end of the opening 11 will be substantially the same as the aggregate areas of the apertures of the strainer disk, so that the flow through the discharge end ofthe nipple will be of substantially the same velocity as through the strainer disk, with a full flow of water. Th tapering or contraction of the discharge end of the nipple also assists in preventing the stream of water from spreading or spray- 111g.
It is desirable to have the strainer disk at the inner or upper end of the nipple, for breaking up and dividing the stream of water at a distance from the discharge end of the nipple, and giving the jets or substreams an opportunity to unite before be ing discharged. By having the screwthreads 12 on the exterior of the body 10, it is possible to use the strainer disk at the upper or inner end of the nipple, so as to be located within the nozzle or outlet portion 13. Furthermore, the interior surface of the nipple can be smooth, without having screw-threads, for the smooth flow of water through the nipple Fig. 5 shows another form of strainer nipple in which the body 10" has a strainor disk 16 secured in the inner or upper end portion thereof, the same as the disk 16, and from the shoulder 14 at the base of the screw-threaded portion 12", the body is tapered, as at 20, to its discharge end, and said tapered portion has the exterior ribs 23 for retaining; the end portion of a shampoo or shower hose on the nipple, Whit. this type 1i; s. is.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A strainer nipple comprising a tubular body having external screw-threads at its upper end to screw upwardly into the discharge nozzl of afaucet and having a shoulder to seat upwardly against the lower end of said nozzle, and a strainer disk secured to said body at the upper extremity thereof so as to be disposed within the nozzle above the lower end of the nozzle, the interior surface of said body being smooth and the internal diameter olsaid body being reduced from a point below said disk to the lower end of the body.
2. A strainer nipple comprisinga tubular body having its interior surface smooth and having external screw-threads at its upper end to screw-upwardly into the discharge nozzle of a faucet, said body having a rabbet at its upper end forming; a shouldeiu and a strainer disk fitted in said rabbct on said shoulder, to be disposed in said nozzle, said upper end of the body having a lip bent to overlap said disk and hold it against said shoulder.
