ALFRED J". MCDONOUGH, OF MINNEAPGLIS, MINNESOTA.
MAT.
Application filed October 1'7, 1924. Serial No. 744,298.
This invention relates to a mat primarily designed to protect highly finished. and polished surfaces and the like and has for its primary object the construction of a mat which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
An object of the invention is the novel manner of shaping and associating the parts so that they will he efli'eetirely secured together.
A feature of my invention is the novel manner of arranging a slot and forcing the edge portions of the covering therein in a manner as to stretch the covering and seal same in place.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the mat.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detailed enlarged sectional view.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one of the many constructions of my inention the numeral 1 designates a core which may be constructed of any suitable material having the required characteristics. In this particular case the core 1 is shown. in one piece of circular configuration but I wish it to be undersood that it may be of any shape and constructed of two or more sections. This core 1 has a continuous slot 2 formed in its periphery. A fabric covering 3 is arranged over the top of the core and has its edge portion 1. forced into the slot. A flannel covering 5 for the bottom of the core has its edge portion 6 also forced into the slot. It will be noted in the act of forcthe edge portions 4 and. 6 into the slot the covers will be stretched over the core to give a neat appearance thereto. The arrangement of the slot is such that the covers are clamped in position but to assure tight connection I arrange in the slot a certain amount of cementitious material such as glue as indicated at 7. In the hardening of the glue it may be advantageous to subject both sides of the core to a pressure. If found advantageous a section of oilcloth 8 may be arranged between the fabric cover 3 and the core.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I provide a mat which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost and in which the covers are effec tively stretched in place and held in a machine.
It is, of course to be understood the in vention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A protective mat of the character de scribed comprising a core having a continuous slot formed in the edge thereof, a separate covering for the top and bottom of the core and each having its edge portion forced into said slot and a sealing material arranged in the slot.
In testimony whereof I tore.
ALFRED J. MODONOUGH.
