Description

J. N. FULLER MARINE TOY Filed March :3, 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS lltl hll
Patented Aug. 10, 1926.
JOHN N. FULLER, OF LANSDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MARINE r'ox.
Application filed March 3, 1926. Serialli'o. 92,008.
This invention relates to fluid jet propelled vessels, and more particularly to a miniature boat which is intended for use as a toy and provided with means for selfpropulsion over short distances. The prin-- cipal object of the invention is to provide a toy boat in the form of a launch or the like, having a hollow Water and air-tight hull which is adapted to be partially filled with water and the hull further provided on the exterior thereof with means for injecting air pressure into the hull for forcing the water under pressure from the rear submerged portion of the hull by means of a valve controlled fluid jet against the water in which the toy is placed for propelling the toy therein, until the pressure has been exhausted. p
- Another object of the invention is to provide a marine toy as specified, which is simple in construction and operation, ellicient for the purpose for which it has been designed, chea to manufacture, and one which will a 'ord a maximum amount of amusement and instruction at one and the same time.
Uther objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1is a longitudinal sectional view through the marine toy, as described.
Figure 2-is a cross sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the marine toy comprises a boat hull which is formed of sheet metal of a suitable gage adapted to withstand the necessary amount of pressure having a keel 11 secured to and depending from the bottom of the hull 10. In order to provide a water and air-tight structure, the hull is provided with a top plate or deck member 12 which is soldered or welded to the interior of the hull in a horizontal manner adjacent the top edge of the hull 10. A suitable threaded filled opening13 and screw cap 14 therefor is provided centrally on the rear portion 15'of the'deck member 12' for filling the hull with the necessary amount of water. A check valve 16 of standard construction, is threaded centrally into the front end 17 of the deck member 12, with a vertical hand operated plunger pum 18 directly connected to the outer upstan g end 19 of the check valve 16. Said pump is of a suitable size and adapted for setting ,up air pressure between the level of the water in the hull and the undcrside of the deck member 12.
In order to control the releasing of the water under pressure in the hull 10 a suitable water valve 20 is secured to the interior bottom portion 21 of the hull 10 in any well-known manner, with'the valve stem 22 in a vertical upstanding position, and an operating extension rod 23 attached to the stem 22 and the rod 23 extending upwardly through the deck member 12 by means of a stufling or gland nut. 24: which is threaded into the deck member 12, and which has secured outwardly thereof, on its free end, an operating handle or wheel 25 for opening and closing the water valve 20. The water valve 20 in the interior of the hull 10, has a laterally extending inlet nipple in the end 26 thereof, and an outlet pipe 27 with a jet 28 in its outer end 29 secured 'in the outlet opening 30 in the water valve 20, said pipe 27 extending laterally along the gland portion of the hull 10 to the rear or stern of the hull and projects through the hull below the water line, a sli ht distance rearwardly of the hull 10 for e ecting the water which is in the hull under pressure through the jet 28 secured in the outer end 29 of the pipe 27, in a lateral manner against the surrounding water in which the hull has been placed for operation.
While l have shown and described one practical embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood, that I do not limit myself to the exact construction as set'forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described comprising a miniature marine hull including a weighted keel therefor, a deck plate welded to the interior of said hull adjacent the topedges thereof for providing a fluidtight hull chamber, a filler opening and cap therefor provided in the stern portion of said deck plate, a pressure pump and check valve therefor secured in the front portion of said deck plate in a vertical position, a release valve securedto the interior of said hull chamber, means for operating said valve exteriorly of said hull, and means for directing the fluid contents in said hull to 'et extending from and rearwardl of the merged stern portion of said h In a device of the character described g. ofsaid hu to edge therefor 5 for, providing a fluid-tight ull-chamber, a
filler opening and screw cap therefor royided in the stern portion of said deck'p ate,
a pressure pump and check valve therefor secured in the front portion of said deck 1 plate in. a vertical osition, a pressure releasing valve secure to the interior of said hull, an upstanding operating rod attached to said "valve and extending through said deck plate for securing an operating-handle to the free extended end of said r0 and a pipe and "et therefor secured to said valve and exten 'ng through the rear end of said hull for ejecting fluid under pressure rearwardly' of the submerged stern portion of said hull.
In testimony whereof I aflix m i. g JOHN N.
