in place. The usual method of removing a hung fixed in a barrel is to jar the bung loose with a hammer until it is easily removed, and when this is notfeasible,
wedges such as chisels are inserted between the bung and hole and a prying leverage is 1 ,exerted on. said chisel wedges to loosen the fit of the bung for its easy extraction. In the majority ofcases, chisels must be employed and when they are, the surface of the bung hole is marred and damaged so that a succeeding bung will not fit into place in a leak-proof manner. This inventionis designed to eliminate these features by pro- .viding a lever and a screw arrangement which cooperate in extracting a hung in such manner so nothing but a bung is damaged, it being" customary to use new bungs at successive sealings of a barrel or container. l w The above and other objects will become characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing. Said device consists of a base plate 16 in which an axial relatively large opening 17 is provided. A plurality of posts 18 project upwardly from the upper face of the base plate 16 and are surmounted by a cover flange 19 which has openings 20 therein. These posts are rectangular in cross section and form guides for a sliding apparent in thedescription below, in which the hole. 7 between the bung and hung hole, the outer carriage. The sliding carriage comprises a plate having arms 21 extending outwardly from an axis at a ngles which are separated by 90 degrees. The arms 21 are provided with recesses 22 which register and are in sliding contact with the surfaces of the post 18, which latter guide the carriage in its vertical movement between the cover flange 19 and the base plate 16. The arms are further provided-with inclined surfaces 23 in which radiating channels 24 are formed. In these channels, the heads of wedge chisels 25 are slidably mounted. The wedge chisels are provided at their upper end with ledges '26 and grooves 27, and additional loweu ledges 28, andhave a knife edge 29 at their lower ends. These Chisels are slidable in the channels 24 and describe a radial'pathway. toward the axis of the plate forming part of the arms 21. At a point near the intersection of these arms 21, a pair of lifting studs 30 are mounted. These studs are provided with flanges 31 which areadapted to be engaged by a bifurcated lever 32 -which is pivoted on a pin 33, the latter being anchored-in a block 34. A stud 35 is slidably mounted in the cover flange and extends vertically. This stud has a decreased diameter which serves as a shank 36, said shank being surmounted by a handle 37. The lower end of the stud 35 passes thru an opening in the plate having arms 21 and at its lower end, has a conical tip 38 fashioned asa wood screw and is rigid with the stud 35. A bar 39 is formed integral with the. block 34: and extends out wardlyfrom said block beneath the bifurcated lever 32.
In using the device for extracting bungs, the device is placed over a hung hole from which the bung isto be removed. These bungs usually fit securely and tightly into To loosen the frictional contact free end of the bifurcated lever is lifted. The lever being fulcrun'led onsthe pin 33, rotates the bifurcated end downwardly and lowers the arms 21 attached to the plate. Before manipulating the lever 32, the chisels 25' are adjusted within their channels 24 to such position that they will comfortably fit around the bung 40 at four different positions, whichpositions being 90 degrees from the other. The bifurcated end of the lever 32 is then lowered thus urging the arms 21 downwardly to cause the chisels 25 i to we dge themselves between the bung and bung hole. When in this position, the stud is lowered manually and the handle 37 is rotated so that the screw tip 38 engages the material of the bung, which is commonly wood, and in this manner, secures itself thereto. The handle 37 is then manually lifted after the lever 32 has been lifted, and afterth'e chisels 25 have partly pried the bung 4O loose from the bung hole,
