RACK FOR DISHWASHING MACHINES.
Application filed September 29, 1923.
This invention relates to racks for dish washing machines.
Objects of this invention are to provide a rack for a dish washing machine which will engage and hold widely different types of dishes, plates and similar articles, which is so constructed that it is inherently braced against undesirable deflection, and which is so constructed that it may be readily produced and readily positioned within and removed from a dish washing machine.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through the rack, such Figure corresponding to a section on the line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the rack.
The rack comprises a pair of side frame members each having spaced upstanding members 1 connected by a transverse member 2. From the transverse member, a pair of arms 3 project inwardly of the rack-such arms terminating in downwardly extended feet 4. The arms 1 are each provided with a socket 5. A U-shaped upright has its vertical arms 6 socketed within the members 1 and secured thereto in any suitable manner. The upper portion of these U-shaped members are bent inwardly, as indicated at 7 in Figure 2, and are adapted to be gripped bv the operator and used as handles for positioning and removing the device. The side frame members are connected by a pair of parallel rods 8 which are received within the sockets and securely fastened thereto.
Below .and centrally of the members is a third rod 9 is positioned and is secured to transverse members 2 of the side frame.
It will be seen from the description thus far given that the side frames are joined by the three rods 88 and 9 and that such construction provides a truss-like frame work.
A plurality of spring bars are secured to the transverse rods at regularly spaced points as shown in the drawings, and each rod comprises upwardly projecting portions 10, whose lower ends are passed through apertures in the rods 8.
From the upper portions of the members 10, the spring bars extend inwardly and prcvide gradually slanting portions 12 which at their inner ends Serial No. 665,594.
rapidly or sharply slanting portions 12.
These portions 12 continue downwardly to the rod 9 and are clamped to such rod as shown. Y
The peculiar construction of these spring bars provides means for engaging either a large plate or a small saucer. For instance, when a large plate is employed, the upper portions 11 catch and retain such plate. However, when a smaller article, such a saucer, is used in the'machine, it is engaged by the portions 12. Further, the construction described causes the bars to additionally brace and strengthen the transverse bars 8 and 9 and to provide therewith a very rigid and strong structure.
It is to be noted further that the arrangement of rods and bars is such that a minimum of obstruction is presented to the sprayed or thrown water; that although this desirable result is attained, nevertheless, the dishes, plates and other articles are held in an upstanding effective manner such as is highly desirable in dish washing machines.
In using the device, the dishes are placed therein and the device is lifted by means of the handles 7 into the casing of the dish washing machine. It there rests upon supports 13 (see Figure 2) which engage the transverse portions 3 of the side frames adjacent their inner ends. This arrangement prevents undue sagging or distortion of the rack for, it will be seen, that the weight of the entire device is transmitted downwardly through the members 1, that is to say, upon the outer side of the supports 13. This tends to rock the side frames outwardly with reference to the supports 13'. However, in view of the fact that the articles are pressed downwardly upon the rods 8 and 9, these rods are slightly bowed and tend to pull the side frame members inwardly thus tending to rock them inwardly about the supports 13. It will be seen, therefore, that these two tendencies to a material extent neutralize each other and thus a rack is provided which is remarkably free from distortion due to the weight of the load carried thereby.
It is further to be noted that the vertical and lateral spacing of the bars 9 and 8 1s such'as to provide the maximumstrength its-r the devicei Although one form of the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. A rack for a dish washing machine comprising side frame members having reenfo'ced lower portions provided with inwardly extending feet having downturned inner ends adapted to abut supports with the outer portion oi said inturned ends overhanging and projecting beyond said supports, rods extending between said side frame members and comprising a pair of upper outer rods, and a centrally located lower rod, said rods being relatively rigid, and relatively springy wires having their ends secured to the outer rods and extendingupwardiy therefrom, each of said wires being downwardly bent to form a central portion below the outer portions of such wires, said central portions being rigidly secured to the central and lowermost of said rods.
2. A rack for a dish washing machine comprising side frame members a pair of transverse rods connecting said members above their bot-toms, a third transverse rod connectingsaid members and located beiow and between said pair of rods, and a plurality oi spring bars having their ends secured to said pair of rods and their central portions secured to said third rod, each of said spring bars extending upwardly from said pair of rods, inwardly along a downwardly slanting line, and then downwardly to the said third transverse rod along a line slanting at a greater angle than said first mentioned slanting line.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of El is consin.
