REMOTE CONTROLAPPARATUS.
Application led November 1.8, 1924. Serial No. 750,704.
The object of this invention is to provide means for controlling th-e spark, or throttle,
of an internal combustion engine from the ot an omnibus,
can be used on railroad cars, ships, or otherV places for the handling oit the spark advance, or the throttle opening, oil pressure mechanism, or for engaging or disengaging the clutch, or for shifting or neutralizing gearing.

Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side view illustrating my remote control apparatus.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing in detail a type of valve which may be used.
The variable pressure reducing valve 1 may be ot' an ordinary type. In order that the invention may be clearly understood I have shown in Fig. 2 one form of reducing valve which is found satisfactory, but it will be understood that this reducing valve is well known in the art and does not of itself constitute any part of my invention. v The Vvalve 1 is connected with a pipe 2 which supplies air under pressure from any suitable source. The valve is provided with a main chamber 2a and a valve 2b is interposed between the pipe 2 and the chamber., A valve 2 is interposed between the chamber and a suitable exhaust port 2d. The upper part ot the chamber 2fl is closed by a diaphragm 2B to the top oit which pressure is applied by means of a spring 2f. By means ot a handle 3 which cooperates with. cam surfaces 3 the spring 2f can be adjusted to vary the pressure applied to the top ot the diaphragm 2e. A discharge pipe t communicates with the chamber 2a at 4a.
vWhen pressure is admitted to the valve through the pipe 2, the diaphragm 2*? is forced upward in opposition to the spring 2f thus closing` or partly closing the valve 2b and increasing the opening of the valve 2C. The closing of the Valve 2l and the opening of the valve 2C causes a definite pres-- sure to be established in the chamber 2a, this pressure being determined by the pressure exerted by the spring 2f. Any change in the pressure in the chamber 2L consists in .corresponding changes inthe positions of the valves 2b and 2c, and in thisway the pressure in the chamber is maintained constant. The pipe i leads to the pressure end of a cylinder 5, in which is a piston 6. The piston 'rod 7 ot the piston is connected by a link 8 to one arm 9 of a lever 10, which is pivoted at 11 to any iixed point. Attached to the other arm 12 of the lever' is a coiled spring 13, which, in turn, is secured to a fixed bracket 1K1. This spring opposes the pressure ot air in th-e cylinder 5. The valve 1 is such that any desired pressure from zero to the maximum in the supply pipe can be maintained in the pressure end of the cylinder 5.
The pressure in the cylinder is opposed by l the spring 13 so that, by varying the amount of pressure admitted to the cylinder', it is possible to hold the piston at rest at any deslred point ofl the stroke. The piston through its rod and link 8 can be connected to a suitable spark or throttle advance, or throttle mechanism of an internal combustion engine oi an omnibus, or other vehicle. It can also be used for other purposes Where it is desired to shift the mechanism and to hold it at a predetermined point.
I claim:
1. The combination in a remote control apparatus, of a pipe for supplying air under pressure; a pressure reducing valve connected to said pipe, the said valve being adjustable to maintain any desired pressure; an air cylinderl connected to the valve; a piston in the cylinder; and a spring for balancin the pressure within the cylinder to hold the piston in the position in which it is adjusted.
2. The combination in a remote control apparatus, of a pipe for supplying air under pressure; a pressure reducing valve connected to said pipe, the said valve being adjustable to maintain any desired pressure; an air pressure cylinder connected to the valve; a piston in the cylinder, said piston having rod; a pivoted lever, one arm of said lever being connected to the piston rod; and a balancing spring connected to the other arm ot' the lever and to a fixed point, said piston being adapted to be connected toa spark advance, throttle, or other device, so as to be held in the position in which it is ad justed.
