Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented not. a, mic.
- Application filedMarch 14, 1917. Serial No. 154L697.
To all/whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, Emvns'r E; PUNGHES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lWayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a mixing device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means, in a manner hereinafter set forth, for mixing air and gas so that the same may be used as an explosive mixture in connection with an internal combustion engine.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above type which may be connected directly to an engine and thus eliminate the usual intake manifold.
A further object of my invention is to provide a mixing device for air and gas whereby the commingling of air and gas is simultaneously controlled through the me dium of novel valve connections that may be operated from a remote point.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a mixing device consisting of comparatively few parts that are easy to assemble, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for safely mixing air and gases to produce an explosive mixture.
1 attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the mixing device;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of device, and
Fig. ,4: is a detail view showing a slight modification of the valve articulating means.
In the drawing, 1 denotes an elbow providing a mixing chamber 2 and the upper end ofsaid elbow is flanged, as at 3, so that it may be easily connected to an engine with the mixing chamber 2 in position to supply an explosive mixture to the cylinder or cylinders of the engine.
The lower end of theelbow 1 is provided with a detachable valve seat member 4: having a spider or guide member 5 for an air valve stem 6. The stem 6 has a valve 7 seated on the valve seat member 4 andsaid valve is adapted to admit air to the chamber 2 of the elbow 1.
The elbow 1 is formed integral with the upper end of the supply pipe 8 adapted to admit an explosive gas to the chamber 2, intermediate the ends thereof. he gas supply pipe 8 is provided with a valve body 9 for a rotatable ported valve plug 10 adapted to control the admission of gas to the mixing chamber 2. The valve plug 10 has a stem 11 and suitably fixed thereon is the head 12 of an operating lever 13. The head 12 is provided with an ofiset lLl-shaped arm lt and loose on the lateral portion 15 of said arm is an eye member 16 pivotally connected by The eye member 16 has a lateral extension 18 protruding into the peripheral groove 19 of a nut 20 screwed upon the end of the arm 14-, and by adjusting the nut 20, the eye member 16 may be shifted upon the lateral portion 15 of the arm 14: so as to regulate the movement of the valve 7 relative to the movement of the lever 13.
In Fig. 3, one end of the valve plug 21 has an operating lever 22 and the opposite end thereof a straight crank 23, said straight crank being connected to the valve 7 similar to the preferred form of construction.
A slight modification of i the preferred form of construction is shown in Fig. 4, wherein an arm 14 has an adjustable lateral portion 15 held by nuts 24:. This construction permits of a very minute adjustment being made so that the valve 7 will have a predetermined movement relative to the valve plug 10.,
The pipe 8 may receive gas from any suitable source and with a reduction of atmospheric pressure in the elbow 1 and the valves 10 and 7 open, air and gas are drawn into the elbow to intimately commingle prior to passing into the combustion chamber of an engine cylinder.
It is thought that the operation and utility of themixing device will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the tructural elements are susa link 17 to the outer face of the valve 7., l
ceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A mixing device comprising an elbow, a detachable valve seat member carried by one end thereof, a gas supply pipe communicating with said elbow at a point above said valve seat member, an air valve movable to and from said valve seat member and having a stem slidable in said valve seat member and in a plane parallel with said gas supply pipe, a gas valve body carried by said gas supply pipe, a plug in said valve 15 body disposed at right angles to said gas supply pipe and provided with a stem, a U-shaped arm carried by the stem of said plug, and having a portion in parallelism with the stem of said plug, a member on i said arm articulated with the slidable stem ERNEST E.
