WILLIAM J. HARTMAN, F HAMILTON, OHIO.
FORCE PUMP FOR HOUSEHOLD USE.
Application filed September 11., 1924. Serial No. 737,214.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple and very effective force pumpfor use in the household to force obstructions and the like from Waste pipes and other plumbing fixtures, with which a much higher pressure can be obtained than with the devices now in use.
The invention consists of that novel construction of bulb plunger to be hereinafter particularly described and claimed, whereby the above-results are attained.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the bulb, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the complete device. 1
The plunger comprises a hollow spheroconical bulb 1 of rubber or other suitable resilient material. The upper portion ofthe bulb 2 is formed substantially thicker than the conical sides 3 ,andwith arecessed head 4 in which is seated a handle 5 of convenient length for use. An annular rib 6 is molded on the inside of the handle recess and an annular groove provided for the handle so that the bulb can be readily and easily attached tothe handle.
The lower end of the bulb is formed with a neck 7 opening into the bulb and of a diameter to be capableof insertion in the end of any waste pipe to be cleared. The lower end of the bulb will make a close airtight fit with the pipe and the bulb is shaped so as tofbe adapted for ready insertion in any diameter of opening which may be met ters" Patent, is
with in ordinaryfhousehold use. The bulb being thus inserted inthe pipe opening, a quick downward thrust of the handle will force the air contained in the bulb through the pipe and thus force out any obstruc- 40 tion. Repeated thrusts of the handle may be necessary and with the withdrawal of the handle, air will fill into the bulb through the neck for the next operation.
The downward thrust of the handle will cause the conical side walls to expand outwardly without dislodging the neck portion from the pipe and. for that reason the upper portion of the bulb through which the pressure is applied is formed substantially thicker and heavier than the lower portion.
A very efliective device is, therefore, obtained with which high air pressurecan be obtained, and this pressure transmitted to the contents of the pipe, without leakage by mason of the fact that the bulb is adapted to be inserted inside of the pipe to be cleared.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- In a force pump for clearing obstructions from pipes and the like, a compression member comprising a sphero-conical hollow bulb having a discharging neck adapted to ,extend within a pipe to be cleared, said bulb 65 having a rounded portion adj acent-said neck for retaining said compression member ex-- teriorly of the pipe to be cleared.
WILLIAM J. HARTMAN.
