FEED-WATER HEATER.

The present invention relates especially to feed water heaters for locomotive use, the object of the invention being to provide means for avoiding undue loss of heatfrom B the boiler through the heater support and using the boiler heat to prevent freezing in the heater and its passages.
For a full understanding of the invention, a detailed description of a construction em :bodying the invention in a preferred form will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawing,forming a part of this specification and the features forming the invention then specifically pointed out in the 1 claims.

Referring to the drawing, a locomotive feed Water heating unit of the type described and claimed in my United States Letters Patent #1350322, dated August 24, 1920, is shown, this unit comprising a heater 1, a hot water storage tank 2, a cold water supply pump 3, a hot water feed pump 4, and a steam engine cylinder 6 for actuating pumps 3 and 4.- This unit is shown as supported from the boiler C by two brackets 5 secured to the locomotive boiler O in any suitable manner and each-provided with feet 7 corresponding to feet Son the feed water heater unit and secured thereto by bolts.
According to my present'invention the space between the brackets 5 is enclosed by any suitable means so that heat radiated from :boiler C passes through the .closed chamber, thus formed, to the back of the heater and its pumps, which, together with the heat conducted to the heater by the brackets 5 and the enclosing means, is utilized to prevent freezing thereof and undue loss of heat from the boiler.
This may be accomplished in many ways, butIprefer the form shown in the drawings 50 in which the brackets 5 are without openings through them so as to enclose the sides of'the space between the boiler and heater and are formed integrally with top and bottom olosure plates 9 and the bracket support as a whole is provided with a finished front edge 10, meeting a corresponding finished edge on the back of the heater and its pumps.
It will be seen that this structure pro vides a very simple and rigid support, the interior of which is practically closed to the outside air, so that the heat radiated from the locomotive boiler may be utilized to prevent freezing of the heater and its pumps and this heated space prevents undue loss of heat from the boiler.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular means shown for enclosing the space between boiler and heater nor to the type of heater illustrated but that these may be changed While retaining the invention defined by the claims. In very cold climates,- the brackets may be covered with heat non-conducting material.
Whatis claimed is 1. The combination with a locomotive boiler, of a feed'water heating unit, comprising a feed water heater and its cold water supply and hot water feed pumps, brackets supporting the feed water heating unit on the locomotive boiler and formed to enclose the space between the boiler and the heater and cold water pump and utilize the boiler heat in maintaining the temperature of the heater and pump.
2. The combination with a locomotive boiler, of a feed water heating unit, co1nprising a feed water heater and cold water supply and hot water feed pumps, ofbrackets and'supports on the boiler co-acting to support the feed Water heating unit on the boiler and enclose the space between the boiler and the heater and cold water pump to utilize the boiler heat in maintaining the temperature. of the heater and pump.
3. The combination with a locomotive boiler, of a feed water-heating apparatus, including a feed water heater and a cold water supply pump cast integrally, brackets supporting the feed water heating apparatus on the, locomotive boiler and formed to enclose the space between the boiler and the heater and cold water pump and utilize the boiler heat in maintaining'the temperature of'the heater and cold water supply pump.
