This invention relate's'to door checlrsor.
stops and the object is to .provide an elicient device of this character for applicationl to doors, particularly to the doors kof vehicles with closed bodies, to limit y,the *opening movementthereoi'. yThe particular embodie` ment ,of my invention chosen for purposes of `illustration herein by wayv oit examplev `might be considered an improvement'on the device shownin myv copending application, Serial No. 710,854, filed May 3, 1924.
y.My invention will :best reference to the `following form thereof shown in drawings, whereinbf; y
Fig. lis a horizont'al,sectionthroughV a portion of the hinge pillar of avehicle body` and the'adjacentportion of the door, the door being in open position;v
Fig. 2 is a similar view with thedoor closed;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of vthe stop with the parts extended in alignment, 4the yview being on a larger scale;` and Figfi is va plan of the stop.,
`. My invention relates to a device for limiting the opening movement Oi: a door so that it w1ll not swing open'too far and is herein 'shown as applied, to a stop of the type shown 1n my copending application above referred to and which takes thev form of a series of hinge leaves 7, 9, 11 andgl, theleaves 9 and 11 being adapted to extend as shown in i Fig. 1 between points of the hinge pillar 15 and hinge style 17 which separate from one `another in the lopening movement of the door, and to form a'foldable connection adapted to lie between the pillar and style and be housed in suitable mortises therein when the door is shut, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be obvious that as the leaves 9 and' 11 come into alignment theyl serve yas a connection across this angle between the door and the hinge pillar Vand prevent further swinging movement of the door about its hinges 19. The leaves 7 and 13 provide convenient means `for securing the ends of the leaves 9 and'll to the door and to the hinge'pllar, they being preferably attached by screws to the inner faces of the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and To prevent the toggle formed by the leaves v9 yand 11 (see Fig. l) `from throwing over past dead center and further tominimize the be understood by` .description of, one the yacconfipz rnyini'g" p "esta for' the' shack which is einen a sie istop byits action in halting the' swinging .M movement of the door a latfspr-inglQmay be riveted to leaf l1 in -such l end extendspast the4 hinge Joint between the leaves 9-and11 and is presented tothe,y
`a manner thatits back of the leaf 9jso as tocome vin Contact .therewith and bear thereagain'st when the Y eaves `assume the position shown in Fig. 1
shortly beforethey come into. alignment and to yield. resiliently whenggthe llnks'ffarestraightened Iout into alignment as shown 'in Figly., This arrangement permits the door togopen yfreely ybut as the leaves icome to',` the posit-ion offlig. 1, the movement is lcush- 'ionechvv a sharp kshock not "thrr'i'wn on the 'parts'and the reaction of the v spring tends to return the leaves to the position shown ingl v Fig. 1 slightly off deadI center'so that in the closing movement of the door they col'- signedv to exert a pressure upon `the hinge leaves binding them on their pintles to prevent anyA rattling. `Herein I 'have shown a flat bowed spring`2l secured at'one end to rthe inner face of'theleaf l1 and adapted to be presented to the opposed faceof thelinl:
I therefore provide.
for preventing any noise, A stop of the pres- 9 when the parts are in the closed position l shown in F ig. 2 tweenthe two leaves. the'spring creates a three pintle pins Whicl parts froml rattling. f
I prefer to utilizefa flat spring 21 interposed between thetwo leaves as herein shown as it may` form a unit with the series of leaves, as shown in Fig. 3, and presents a smooth surface when the door is open, as shown in Fig. 1, without Vany projecting By this arrangement pressure against the so as to be compressed be-f Aprevents any of the parts orcorn'ers which might catch in cloth-l f ing. In the example shown the spring 21' `is appliedto the same leaf as the spring 19 andmay be securedby the same rivets 23.
I have described inI detail the particular structionv may embodiment of my invention shownby way of example in the accompanying drawings. Obviously the details of mechanical con be considerably varied without departing from the spirit `of the invention.
What I claim as by Letters Patent following claims.
new and desire to secure I shall express in the 1. A door stop comprising 'a `pairof hingedy leaves provided with means for connecting vthem to the hinge pillar and hinge style,`
necting them to the hinge pillar and hinge style, said leaves adapted to fold between pillar and style when the. door is closed and extend substantially diagonally Vtherebetween when open and cushioning means carried thereby and interposed between .the adjacent rextend faces of the leaves when the door is closed.
3. A door stop comprising a pair of hinged leaves'provided with means for connecting them to the hinge pillar and hinge style, said -leaves adaptedy to. fold 'between pillar and style when the door; is'closeid yand extend substantially diagonally therebetween when open, a spring secured to one leaf and having an end presented to engage the other as the leaves approach alignment, a spring secured to the opposite face of said one leaf and presented to the other as theleaves close and common means for securing the springs.
4. A door stop comprising a pair of hinged leaves provided with means for con'- necting them to the hinge pillar and hinge style, said leaves adapted to fold between pillar and style when the door is closed and substantially diagonally 'therebetween when open and spring means disposed when the door is in closed position to act on the leaves to cause va binding ypressure of the same on their pivot but V.being relieved of pressure when the door is 'slightly open.
In testimony whereof` I have signed vmy name to this specification. i
