H. CROSKEY El AL DOOR CHECK Filed Dec. 8, 1945 IN VEN TOR.
v flGENT Patented Nov. 16, 1948 DOOR CHECK Earl H. Croskey and. Victor Rapids, Iowa, assignors 01' M. Hackman, Cedar one-third to Clayton Mossman,- Cedar Rapids, Iowa Y Application December 8, 1945, Serial No. 633,710 6 Claims. (Cl. 16-49) The present invention relates generally to door checks and like devices.
The object and the and for automatically holding the door closed after it is closed.
vention, size relative to the truck body.
Figure 2 isan enlarged fragmentary view ofthe door check mechanism as it would appear when the door is in the open position, and Figure 3 is a similar view showing the mechanism with the door in the closed position.
The delivery truck or the like, in which the present invention is incorporated, is indicated by the reference number I and has a rear door frame 2 in which a rear door 3 is mounted by means such as the upper and lower hinges I, which establish a generally vertical hinge axis which may a certain degree; depending upon the particular the truck body. v
The door check structure, with which the present invention is more particularly concerned, is indicated in its entirety by the reference numeral i and comprises a support in the form of a guide rod 8, the ends of which are received in two angle brackets 9 and ill by which the rod is fixed to the upper part of the door frame 2, thus being out of the way when loading and unloading the truck. The guide rod 8 may be secured to the angle brackets by means such as the nuts 2!.
A bracket I2 is amxed to the door 3 adjacent the hinge axis, but spaced a slight distancetherefrom as indicated tured to receive a in the drawings, and is aperpin I l or the like by which a link i3 is pivotally connected thereto. The other end of the link I3 is also pivotally connected and in a similar manner, as at M, to a lug ii that forms a part of a slide it, this slide being mounted on the rod or support 8 and slideable thereon. A spring I8 is disposed on the rod 8 between the bracket 9 and the slide i6, and an auxiliary spring I8 is disposed at the other side of the slide, between the latter and the other bracket Hi. The door bracket Figure 3, that when the door 3 is closed, the pin li lies inwardly of a dead-center line joining the hinge axis of the door and the link pivot it, so that the spring l8, which is compressed when the door is closed, acts to hold the door closed with a firm and positive spring action. However, when the door is opened, the pin ii passes across said deadcenter line and, as best shown in Figure 2, lies outwardly of the line joining the pivot i4 and the hinge .axis of the door, whereby the force of the spring I8 biases the door outwardly and serves to s'erving asa frame, style and/or construction of hold it open. In this position, the auxiliary buffer spring i9 opposes the spring i8, serving to cushionthe outward movement of the door when it is I being opened.
It is, of course, understood thatadoor check mechanism embodying the principles of our invention may be appliedto doors other than those of trucks.
Although we have described a specific embodiment of our invention, it is apparent that modifications thereof may be made by those skilled in the art. Such modifications maybe made without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A door check for a door hinged to means comprising a pair of brackets fixed to said door frame means, agrod', carried thereby, a slidemounted on saidrod and having spring carried by said rod and said brackets most remote from the door hinges, a second apertured lug, a link connecting said lugs, and means fixing said second lug to said door in a position relative to the hinge axis thereof such that, in the closed position of the door, said second lug moves into an overcenter position-v whereby said spring acts through said slide and link 'to yieldably hold said door in a closed position.
2. A door check for a door hinged to means I 2 is so disposed, as best shown in serving as a door frame, comprising a support fixed to said frame, a slide shiftable on said support, a spring acting against said slide to urge the slide in one direction, an apertured section on said slide, a link pivoted to said apertured section at one en means pivoting said link to the door at the other end, said means comprising a part fixed to the door in such a position relative to the hinge axis of the door, that when the door is closed said part moves into a position inwardly of a dead-center line connecting the hinge axis and said apertured section, whereby the force of said spring acts to hold the door closed.
3. The invention as defined in claim 2, further characterized by said link pivoting means being located on the door so that when the door is open said part is disposed outwardly of said line, whereby the force of said spring serves to hold the door open.
4. The invention as located on the door so that when the door is open said part is disposed outwardly of said line,
whereby the force of said spring serves to hold the door open, and a second spring on said support on the other side of said slide and acting to cushion the opening action of the door after said part has been moved outwardly of said deadcenter line.
5. A door check for a door hinged to means serving as a door frame, comprising a rod disposed horizontally at the upper part of said door frame generally parallel to the plane of the door opening, means fixing said support to said frame, a slide thereon, a spring acting against said slide to move the latter in one direction along said rod, a bracket fixed to the door adjacent the hinge axis, and a link extending between said defined in claim 2, further characterized by said link pivoting means being slide and said bracket, the latter being located in a position such that when the door is closed said bracket is disposed to the inside of a dead-center line extending from the hinge axis to said slide.
6. A door check for a delivery truck having a rear door swingable about a generally vertical axis, comprising a support adapted to be disposed in the upper part of the truck body so as to not interfere with access to the truck, a slide on said support and shiftable thereon, a bracket adapted to be fixed to said door adjacent the hinge axis thereof, a link pivoted at one end to said slide and at the other end to said bracket, a
spring acting between one end of said support and said slide, said bracket being so disposed that, when the door is closed, said bracket lies inwardly of a dead-center line connecting the hinge axis and said slide, whereby the said spring acts against the slide to hold said door closed, and a cushioning spring disposed between said slide and the other end of said support, said spring serving to resiliently resist opening of the door beyond a predetermined point, the said bracket being disposed outwardly of said dead-center line when the door is opened whereby the first mentioned spring serves to hold said door open.
