IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,377, dated February 2, 1875; application tiled December 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs S. AUGHE, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation ot the mold-board side of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the rear end of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the lower side of said plow. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the inner sides of the mold-board and standard as combined. Fig. 5 is a like view of the upper side of the share, and Figs. 6 and 7 are elevations of opposite sides of said standard.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of this invention is to increase the strength, durability, and efficiency of a plow; and to this end it consists in the means employed for connecting together the moldboard and share, whereby the usual toe-pin hole in the former is rendered unnecessary, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the standard or post of my plow, which has the usual conformation upon its land and furrow sides, is constructed hollow at its rear, and at its lower end is horizontal, as shown in Figs. 4t, 6, and 7. The share B has the usual form, and at its upper side is provided with a seat, b. that corresponds to, and receives the lower end of, the standard A, said parts be- `ing then secured together by means of two bolts, C and C, which pass downward through the web ct, that forms the foot of said standard, and through said seat b, and upon their threaded ends receive nuts c and o. The mold-board D has the usual curve and dimensions, and is fitted against the side of the standard A and within the projecting edge of the seat b of the share B, and is secured in position by means of two bolts, E and E, that pass horizontally inward through corresponding openings formed in said standard and the contiguous portions of said moldboard, the heads of said bolts being contained within corresponding countersunk recesses in said mold-board, while their inner ends are lireaded and receive nuts c and e, as seen in The lower edge of the mold-board, where it comes into contact with the share, is square instead of having the usual beveled form, and fitsV against or .behind a lip, b', that extends upward from the edge of the seat or platform bof said share, by which means the strength and durability of said mold-board are materially increased at such points.
It will be seen that the mold-board is supported along` its front edge by the standard, and along its bottom edge by the share, and that, while possessing all required strength to resist the pressure of the soil, it is free from the toe-pin hole, which is usually employed for the passage of a bolt to unite the mold-board and share.
The result of the omission of the toe-pin hole is a material increase of the strength ot the mold-board, and a corresponding decrease in the liability of its breakage, said hole being the point at which cracks usually commence.
In addition to this advantage, the plow wears more evenly, and cleans or scours more thoroughly, in consequence of the omission of said toe-pin hole and its bolt,l the surface being uniform and ofthe same density, while, in case of the usage of said bolt, the metal composing the head of the same never wears equally with the mold-board, and either a ridge or a furrow is formed at such point.
Having thus fully set forth the nat-ure and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- The combination of the standard A a., share B b, and mold-board D by means of the bolts E and E passing horizontally through said standard and mold-board, and the bolts C and G passing vertically through said standard and share, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
