Description

1. PEEK.
Plow-Poi nts.
PatentedJuI y-I4,I874. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES'A. PEEK, OF NORTH MANCHESTER, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-POINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,109, dated July 14, 1874; application filed May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. PEEK, of North Manchester, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Self -Sharpening and Supporting Reversible Plow-Points; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a bottom view of my plow, and Fig. 2 is a side view. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view.
This invention has relation to turn-plows having curved metal beams and reversible points. It consists in constructing the landside of the plow of four separate pieces or sections, removably secured to the lower portion of the beam, one of said pieces or sections being of such a shape that it forms a double ended reversible and self-sharpening point, and wedges itself in its place, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is the description of my invention: In the annexed drawing, A designates the plow-beam, the rear or standard portion of which is made broad and terminates at its front end in a dovetailed point, a, which is groovedlongitudinally and notched vertically, as shown in Fig. 4. This dovetailed portion ais formed on the land side of the standard portion of the plow-beam, and in rear of this portion a is a diamoml-shaped portion, 1), having beveled edges, and forming in combination with two shoulders, c 0, two backwardly-converging grooves, d d. The general outline of the parts described on the land side of the plow-standard is that of a diamond. B O designate two plates, which have beveled edges, and which are removably bolted to the plow-standard, so as to form, in combination with the shoulders c c and the grooves d d, an angular recess, which is adapted for receiving the rear half of a diaby Letters Patent, is
mond-shaped plow-point, D, the upper and lower edges of which are beveled to correspond snugly to the beveled edges of the two plates B O. The lower edge of this point, which is exposed beyond the plate 0, and the lower edge of the latter, form the land-side sole, as shown in Fig. 1. The point D has a diamond-shaped opening, D, centrally through it, which is bounded by double-beveled edges e-e, adapted to be received into the grooves and notch in the dovetailed portion a.
The plates B O are respectively secured to the standard by a single bolt, which will allow them to adjust themselves tightly to the plow-point, when it is forced backward between them. E designates a plate having beveled edges, which is fitted into the hole D through the point D and constructed to bear in a wedging manner against the rear beveled end of the portion a, and when bolted to the standard to firmly hold the point in its place. When the parts B, G, D, and E are secured in their places their land side surfaces are all flush with the surface ofthe portion a.
I thus form a sectional land-side, the sections composing which can be renewed at pleasure. I also obtain a plow-point which is reversible end for end, which can be turned over, and which is self-sharpening.
The share Gr and mold-board, J are secured to an inclined flange, g, which is formed 011 the beam-standard, as shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure The land side of the beam standard A constructed with a grooved and notched portion, a, in combination with the removable plates B O, the grooves d (I, the point D, and clamp ing-plate E, constructed substantially as described.
ln testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. PEEK. Witnesses:
JoI-INsoN M. BURDGE, D. S. MILLER.
