MEASURING- MACHINE.
Application filed February 20, 1925. Serial No. 10,629.
This invention relates to a device espeoially designed for measuring cloth or the like material and aims to provide novel means to 'facilitate the measuring and han dling of cloth from the bolt.
Another important object of the invention is to provide means whereby the numberof yards of cloth measured by the machine will be accurately registered,`thereby enabling the proprietor of a store to keep accurate account of the number of yards of goods sold.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for cutting` the cloth at a point Where the measured cloth 1s to be severed from the bolt.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and m the details of construction hereinafter den scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ,of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a measuring device constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the manner of supporting the same.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is an elevational view of the cut. ting device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device includes a body portion indicated generally by the reference character 5 which is formed with a central horizontally disposed cut out portion 6 through which cloth to be measured passes.
Mounted in one wall of the cut outl portion 6, is a roller 7 that cooperates with the roller 8 for engaging the cloth material passing through the body portion to remove folds in the cloth and assist in holding the cloth tightly while it is being measured.
The roller 8 isv formed with a shaft 9 that extends-through the elongated openings 10 of the tubular member 11,-which shaft operates in the bearing member 12 that is normally held downwardly by means of the coiled spring 13 that is tensioned by means of the screw 14.
Positioned under the bearing member 12 is an-eccentric 15 carried at the inner end of the shaft 16 that has its outer end formed into a linger piece 17 `whereby the eccentric may be readily operated to raise or lower the bearing member 12 to disengage the rollers 7 and 8. f
Extending laterally from the body1 portion isa measuring arm indicated. yat 18 which is formed with a bore 19 extending throughout the length thereof, the bore having one of its walls cut away providing a slot 20.
The reference character 21 indicates the cloth engaging member and as shown is formed with a tubular member 22 that moves over the flexible member 23 positioned inthe bore 19, the outer end of the member 23 being secured to the hook member 24 carried by the cap 25.
Positioned on the flexible member 23 is a collar 26 adapted to be engaged by one end of the tubular member 22 to move the flexible member 23 when the cloth engaging member 21 has reached the limit of its outward movement. The inner end of the flexible member 23 is connected with the arm 27 carried at the lower end of the rod 28 that extends upwardly and engages suitable gearing of the indicating members carried within the casing 29, which indicating members include hands 30 that are clearly visible from the upper surface of the body portion.
Pivotally carried byj the member 21 is any arm 31 that has a cutting blade 32 that cooperates with the blade 33, the arm being provided with a linger piece 34 which may be engaged by the thumb of the operator to move the blade 32 into engagement with the blade 33, cutting the cloth supported therebetween.
The support for the device includes arms 35 and 36 respectively, which arms have pivotal connection with the counter or table as at 37 while the upper ends of the arms are pivotally connected with the arm 18 at 38.
Pivotally connected with the arm 18 is an arm 39 formed with cut out portions to permit the arm 139 tofbe positioned over the lpivot pin S7-so that the device Vmay be 'held in various positions of adjustment.
The upper surface of' theelfmB isiprOY-ided With graduations indicating a yard sof that each time the member 2l is movedfftl'lroughout the length of the arm 18, a yard is measured.
In the use of the device, the member 17 is operated to mov-elthe roller 8-out o--engagement i with the roller 7,A they cloth tobe measured being .positioned Ibetween fthe rollers and the member `17 moved to-'z'il-lowl the rollersfto clamp thecloth therebetween. The `free end of the cloth is nowtgripped between the thumb of the operatormndv the fingenpiece ofthe member 21, whereupon thevinem'berl is slifd to' the-outer endof the arm .18 ywith the result that `.the ftubular memben-QQ contaotsw'ith thei collar 26,.-moving thei'liexiblemember slt v`follows' that as lther-member` is'fmovedthe rod 28de moved to cause a movement, oit the register ing` hands 30,.l
I Wientlieinember 2l fhaszznioveid Afas Ade-v scribed, it is obvious that'one'yard of cloth has vbeeir measured, and Yshould it y'be `desired to measure tivo `yards of Cloth,Y itfis obvious that the member 21 Would be returned .to its initial` position' and the operation above described repeated.
After the cloth vhas 'been-measured, the cloth ispositioned under the blade 32 and the blade 32 movedathroughl the cloth, eutting tlie'cloth .rat the f place 'vv-fliers.I the measured section should be tornf'romthe bolt.
