UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS FERDINAND DOELLINGER, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
FILLING-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming pait of Letters Patent No. 704,442, dated July 8, 1902. Application filed February 14, 1902. fierial No. 94,065. (No model.)
To all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I,LoUIs FERDINAND Donn LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Filling-Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in indicators for use on lamps and other non-transparent receptacles to indicate when the body has been filled to a proper height with the liquid; and the invention consists in certain novelconstructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view,
,partly broken away and partly in section, illustrating a lamp-body or receptacle provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the indicating devices. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the improvements, the supporting-tube and the cap being indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 4: is a cross-sectional view on aboutline 4 4 of Fig. 2.
By my invention I provide an indicator which maybe applied to the filling-opening of the receptacle or body or be applied to a separate opening, and ordinarily it is preferred to apply the indicator separately from the filling-openin g, as will be understood from Fig. 1 of the drawings. In Fig. 1 the indicating devices are shown at A and the fillingtube at A. As shown, the indicating devices include the supportingtnbe B, which is a short tube and may be secured by soldering or otherwise to the body C in applying the invention to a body already constructed. This tube B is threaded on its outer side at its upper end to receive the cap D and is provided in its inner side with longitudinal grooves E, from which lead the sockets c. The grooves and sockets E and e are arranged diametrically opposite each other. The cap Dis fitted on the tube B and has an opening d, below which is fixed a glass plate d, through which the indicating devices may be seen. The top of the cap is countersunk leading to the opening d, so the glass plate will be thoroughly protected against injury and will not likely be broken. The tube B supports the indicating devices, which include the carrier F and the indicator proper, G. The carrier F is preferably formed in the shape of a bow and of a spring rod or wire of suitable length bent to form the cross-barF, the side bars F and the outwardly-extending studs or stems F", as shown. In applying the carrier to the supporting-tube the arms F are slightly compressed and then fitted within the tube from below, so the said side bars or arms F will lie within the grooves E and the studs or stems F will project within the sockets e. By this means the arms F lying in the grooves E, will prevent lateral displacement of the carrier, while the stems F fitting in the sockets, will hold the carrier longitudinally. Atthe same time the carrier can be readily inserted in and removed from the supporting-tube whenever desired.
The indicator proper is preferably stamped or otherwise formed from a sheet of fiat metal and consists of the main plate G, having the ears G which are perforated and split, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to receivethe crossbar F, upon which the lever pivots, the arm G upon which is supported the cork or other float G", and the upwardly-extending arm G which operates between the side bars F of the carrier F and is provided at its upper end with a suitable head, preferably the extending wing or plate G, which operates be neath the glass plate 01 and serves to indicate by its change of position when the body 0 has been filled to such a height as to raise the float G The construction is simple, easily applied, and certain in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improvement in indicating devices substantially as herein described, consisting of the supporting-tube provided in its inner side with the longitudinal grooves and with the sockets leading outwardly therefrom, the
cap on said tube and having a sight-opening,
the carrier having alower cross-baig side bars or arms, and studs or stems extending laterally from said arms, and fitted to the supporting-tube with the stems or studs in the sockets and the side bars lying in the longitudinal grooves of such tube, and the indicator having a main plate, ears thereon pivoting on the cross-bar of the carrier, a floatsupporting arm, and an arm extending up wardly between the side bars of the carrier and provided at its upper end with a head operating within the supporting-tube, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 5 2. In an indicator substantially as described, the combination with the supportingtube having the internal longitudinal grooves, sockets leading outwardly therefrom, the carrier having a cross-bar and side bars or arms lying within said longitudinal grooves, and studs or stems projecting into the sockets, and the rocking indicator proper pivoted upon the cross-bar of the carrier, substantially as set forth.
3. An indicator substantially as described, comprising the carrier having a cross-bar and opposite spring side bars, and the indicator proper having a lever composed of a main plate, ears thereon pivoted on the cross-bar no of the carrier, and float supporting and indicating arms, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the supportingtube having internal longitudinal grooves, and sockets leading therefrom, of the carrier 25 having the spring side bars to fit in said grooves and the studs or stems to fit in the sockets, and the rocking indicator proper supported by said carrier, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the supporting-tube, the carrier having the opposite side bars en gaged at their upper ends with said tube, and the indicator proper pivoted to said carrier and having an indicating-arm operating between the side bars of the carrier and a floatsupporting arm, substantially as set forth.
6. An indicating device substantially as described, consisting of the support, the carrier comprising a lower cross-bar and arms for connection with the support and the indiears provided with bearings for the cross-bar cator having the indicating devices and the of the carrier and slitted to said bearings to facilitate the connection of the said parts, substantially as set forth.
