3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in geometrical instruments and more particularly to a square, the principal object being-to provide a square with an indicatinginstrument 'wherebythe angularity of a surface being measured can be readily ascertained in degrees.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view (fragmentary) through the form of the invention shown in Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through a slightly modified form of the present invention.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary cross section on the line 1- of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is an edge elevational view of the third form of the invention with the lower portion in section.
Figure 9 is a side elevational view.
Figure 10 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the gear means between the movable blade and the indicator.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that Figures 1 to 5, include the first form of the invention and this consists of an elongated leg 5 and a shorter leg 6, the latter being bifurcated as at I to receive the adjacent end of the longer leg 5, the legs being folded, doweled or otherwise secured together as at 8.
The long leg 5 is channeled throughout its entire length as at 9 to receive a blade I0 which is pivoted at its end opposed to the leg 6, within the channel 9 as at II, while the opposite end has an arcuate slot I2 for receiving a cross pin I3 in the channel 9.
The free end of the leg 5 has a transverse bore I4 for receiving the shank I5 of an indicating instrument generally referred to by numeral I6, and a plunger I I is slidable through this shank I! for operating the indicating end of the indicator l6. This type of instrument is very conventional and a further description will be unnecessary. This typeof instrument has a button I8 at the outer end of its plunger I! and in the present instance normally bearsagainst a butt I9 on the opposed portion of the blade II]. A set screw 20 is feedable into the freeend-of the leg 5 to bite against the shank I5 of-the instrument I6 to prevent displacement of the latter.
Obviously,.when the leg I5 is placed against a structure with the blade 1 0 bearing. againstuthe surface .thereof, the angular variance 1 will be registered on the indicator I5.
A modification of the invention is shown in Figure 6 wherein a short leg 6a and a long leg 5a are fastened together as at 8a., the long leg 5a being channeled as at 9a to accommodate a blade Illa which has a pivot point as at Ila in opposed relation to the leg 6a and slightly inwardly of the pivot point I la, the blade Illa is operative against the plunger I'Ia which operates into an indicating instrument Ilia for operating the mechanism thereof. The indicating instrument Ilia has a shank I5a apart from the plunger Fla and thus distinguish from the indicating instrument I6 and this shank may be secured to the leg Ed by suitable means. A spring-pressed button 2I is provided in the long leg 5a and acts against the blade Ifla in the manner suggested in Figure 6.
The third form of the invention is shown in Figures 8 to 10, inclusive, and this consists of a short leg 6b fastened to a long leg 5b, the latter being provided with a transverse slot extending longitudinally thereof and in which a blade Iflb is operative. The blade Iflb is pivoted to the le 5b adjacent the free end of the latter and as at I I b.
Where the leg 5b is fastened to the leg 6b, a threaded recess 23 is provided for receiving the threaded portion 24 of a screw 25 which is equipped with a tapered plug 26 engageable into a tapered opening 21 in the portion of the blade I022 opposed to the leg 6b. Obviously, by removing this plug 26 from the tapered recess 27, the blade Illb is free to operate in conjunction with an indicating instrument Ilib. However, when the plug 26 is driven into the opening 21, the
blade Iflb is prevented from moving and the instrument serves as a rigid square.
The blade l0b adjacent the opening 21 has a transverse curved slot 28, along the upper edge of which is disposed a rack 29 which engages a gear 30 on a shaft 3|, the shaft 3| extending into the indicating instrument I6b for operating the indicating hand or hands thereof. Numeral 32 denotes a spring friction element for the blade. As can be seen in Figure 7, the release detent means 26 may be employed in conjunction with the pin Na in the form of the invention shown in Figure 6, and in this connection the release detent isdenoted by numeral 33.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the V invention in specific terms, it is to be understood a that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the'invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described adapted to actuate an indicating instrument having anextending arm witha pinion thereon, a
base member, an upright member positioned at an extremity of said base member in right angled relationship' thereto to form a square, means forming a vertical slot in said upright member, a
blade pivotally secured in said slot adjacent its upper extremity, said blade having an elongated slotted aperture adjacent the free end thereof, and a rack in said aperture engageable with said pinion.
