SWINGING-DOOR LOCK.

This invention relates to locks or analogous fasteners for doors or the like, and while the device is designed particularly for double swinging doors, it is obvious that it may be employed in various other relations, and while I show two doors co-operating with each other, either of them might be regarded as a fixed portion of the structure or the door jamb.
Among the objects otthe invention is to provide locking means of unusually positive nature, rendering it impossible for the door to be opened as by jimmying or otherwise without total destruction of either the lock or door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock adaptable for connection ant use with doors of various thicknesses or constructions.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter.
described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed. or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference character designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a construction embodying my lock applied to two cooperating doors, the view being on the outside of the doors and with a part of one of the links broken away and showing the pivot bolt in section in its bearing.

Referring more specifically to the drawings I show my invention as embodied in connection with two co-operating doors A and B which are spaced to swing open as per arrows at and b, and which are indicated as locked shut and in the same plane. The lock mechanism includes a pair of links 16 and 11 preferably of the same length and general construction. The link 10 has holes adjacent to its ends which are counter sunk at 12 and 13, the hole at 12 being extended through the link and of any suitable irregular form such as a cylinder with a flat side and through which the pivot bolt 14 is projected and with its head lying in the counter sink 12. The bolt 14 constituting an anchor member for connecting the links, is externally threaded for a suitable distance and is provided with a flat side 14*, preferably on a side remote from the door A. This bolt is projected through a bearing hole in the door B. The link 11 has two smooth holes near its ends in registry with the holes 12 and 13 of the outer link. The inner end of the bolt 14 extends through a keeper or bracket 16, and between the upper end of the bracket and the door 13 is a nut 17 which may be secured by a set screw 18'. The hole 11 in the link 11 is of the same form as the cross section of the bolt 14 and thereby the links are compelled to swing together when either is manipulated, swinging the same around the axis of the bolt 14 into locking or unlocking position.
The door A is bored at 19 preferably on the same level as the bore 15, and through the hole 13 of the outer link, this hole 19, and a hole 20 of the inner link 11', is projected the locking pin 21 whose head is seated in the counter sink 13 against a spring whose normal tendency is to eject the bolt.
The link 11 when the two links are swung together, drops into a notch or recess 23 formed in the casing 24 of the locking mechanism on the inside of the door A. This casing constitutes an anchor member carried by the door, for cooperating with the.
free ends of the links. The inner end oi this link is notched or recessed at 25 on its lower side. The pin 21 is provided with one or. more annular grooves 21 any one of which will register with the notch 25, and
the bottom of the notch is substantially taugent to the pin at its smallest diameter or at the bottom of the grooves 21 The upper end of the casing is provided with a flap or door 26 hinged at 27 on the side of the casing remote from the door, and this flap is ada 'ate'd to swing upward into open position as shown by dotted lines in. Fig. t in order to admit the link 11, but after the link is thus admitted the flap is closed for the sake of neatness of appearance and to exclude dust, dirt, and so forth.
At 28 I show a key cylinder secured to the door A in the usual mannerandadapted -to be operated by a key 29 andhaving: on its inner end ashank 30"projecting into the axis of a disk 31' having a concentric hub 32 ,journ'aled in a fined bearing 33 fixed in the casing. The dis 5' 31 carries a lag 34pmjecting radially tliereirom and normally upward as shown in Fig. l. This lug is adapted to sweep along the notch 25 of the link 11 and projectinto the groove 21 registering therewith; Therefore it prevents the withdrawalof-the pin 21, and with the pinlockedin place the links of course serve rigidly and strongly to lock the doors closed together.
Any suitable means may be provided to actuate the flap automatically and coincident w-iththe rotation of the key. For this purpose I provide a yokecomprisinga bar 35 to which are seeur'eda pair of rods 36 having their upper. endsjointed at 37 to the inner face of the flap not far remote from the axis of the hinges-27% that a. slight upward thrust of theyoke wills'wihg the flap open. The operation may be. briefly summarized as' follows: If the doors are locked and it is desired to open them, the-operatorwlll insert the key into the cylinden'28 and give a partialtrotation. With the re lease of the lug 3e from the pin the spring 22 will eject the pin from its normal holding position and the operator will grasp it in one hand and with the other he will grasp one of the links, say link 10, and swing it upward and away from the door A. He will then replace the pin 21 and return the key cylinder and hug 34 to the locking position, a position of'the cylinder that is necessary in order to withdraw the key. The links 10 and 11 are then out of the way of the edge of the door The lock casing will be closed atthe flap, the pin 21 will be in its normal place, and the doors are free to swing open. The same general procedure will be followed in locki the doors after they are swung shut again. The bolt 14 is fitted permanently to the door B and its cylindrical side has bearing engagement in that side of the hole 15 nearer to the edge of the door so that any strain that may be brought on the links when in locked position will be borne by the smooth rounded side of the bolt in the bearing hole 15.
I claim:
1. In a door lock, the combination with a casing. for the door, of a locking membercarried by a part independent of said door and movable into the casing, means on the outside of the door tor moving said looking member into and out of locking position. a pin 'projectable through the noor' into locking position with said locking member, and manually controlled means in the casing for locking the pin.
2; Mechanism as set forth in claim 1 in which the locking member swings through an arc of a circle into co-operation with the casing and is provided in one edge with a notch, the pin having a recess registering with. the notch aforesaid, and the manually controlled means including a member mow able along. said notch and into the pin re cess.
3; Mechanism as set forth in claim 1 in which the casing'has a movable flap and means is provided to open the flap for admitting the locking member.
4t. Mechanism as set forth in claim 1 in which the casing is provided with a movable flap at its top, and the locking memher is adapted through the open flap, and the manually controlled means for locking the pin serves automatically to control the position of the flap.
5. In a door lock, the combination 01" a pair of links for co-operation with the inner and outer sides 01 the door, means coupling. the links together for simultaneous movement into and out of locking position, and means to fasten the links in locked posit-ion, inclndim a member passing throu h the door and coupling the ends of the lin {S to swing into the casing in connection with each other to lock the door.
6. A look as set forth in claim 5 in which the first mentioned means anchoring the links together for conjoint movement is' a bolt having means preventing independent movement of the links, the latter mentioned coupling member being movable out of engagement with the links to permit the same to be swung out of locking position.
7 A look as set forth in claim 5 in which the first mentioned means coupling the links together is a bolt having a flat side co-operating with similar portions of the links to prevent relative rotation between the links and having a head counter sunk in one of the links.
8. In a door lock, the combination with an anchor member for a door, an anchor member for a part independent of said door and into proximity with which the door is adapted to move to closed position, one of said anchor members constituting a casing, the other anchor member carrying a bolt, said bolt being movable into the casing, said casing having a movable cover to close over said bolt after reception of the bolt.
9. In a door lock, the combination of a pair of links, pivot means anchoring the links together for conjoint unitary movement at one end and with the other end spaced and adapted to embrace a part to be locked, and a locking pin projectable through the spaced ends of the links and through the part embraced thereby, said pin having a head counter sunkin one of the links and having means for automatic ejection thereof when unlocked.
10. Mechanism as set forth in claim 9 in which the locking pin is provided with one or more annular grooves and one of the links is provided with a notch adapted to register with any one of the pin grooves, and means movable into and out of the register ing groove and notch to hold the pin from movement from the link.
11. In a door lock, the combination with a casing for the door, and a member remote from the door, of a locking member carried by the member remote from the door and movable into cooperation with the door, means interlocking said member in connection with said casing, and manually controlled means to secure said last mentioned means in connection with the casing.
12. Mechanism as set forth in claim 11 in which the manually controlled means is a member movable through the arc of a circle within the casing.
13. In a door lock, the combination of a casing, a member swinging in the arc of a circle across the crack of the door into cooperation with said casing, said member having an arc-shaped recess formed in one edge, and a keeper movable along said recess to adapted to move, one of said anchor mem-.
bers having a movable bolt adapted to engage the other anchor -1nember, said other anchor member having means including 'a movable member for enclosing said bolt after the same is moved into engagement position.
15. In a door lock, the combination of a plurality of anchor members carried by a pair of relatively movable parts, a link, means to secure said link to one of said anchor members whereby the link is movable into engagement with the other anchor member, means passing through said other anchor member and the part carrying the same for securing the free end of the link to said other anchor member, and movable means for operating the last mentioned means from the side of said part opposite that upon which the link is positioned whereby the link may be locked or unlocked as desired.
16. In a door lock, the combination of a plurality of anchor members carried by a pair of relatively movable parts, a link upon each side of said parts extending from one anchor member to the other to lock said parts together from both sides thereof, and means including a movable member for C011? n-ecting said links together with one of the anchor members and movable out of engagement to permit one of the links to be moved out of engagement with one of the anchor members, said movable member being arranged to pass directly through one of said parts.
17. In a door lock, the combination of a plurality of anchor members carried by a pair of relatively movable parts, a link upon each side of said parts extending from one anchor member to the other to lock the parts together, a link being movable out of engagement with one of the anchor members when the parts are to be moved relatively to each other, and means passing through one of said parts and joining the links together when the parts are to be looked as aforesaid.
18. In a door lock, the combination of a plurality of anchor members carried by a pair of relatively movable parts, a link upon each side of said parts extending from one anchor member to the other, to lock the parts together, a link being movable out of engagement with one of the anchor members when the parts are to be moved relatively to each other, and means movable transversely of said links and said parts for joining the links together when the parts are to be locked against movement.
