Application filed November This invention relates to an improved construction of cuff link, and has for its object to provide such a link with two members permanently and yet yieldably connected together by ball and socket joint, whereby the members of the link may be swung to any desired angle relative to each other when positioned in a culi With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be'more fully described, and particularly point-ed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings z* Figure. 1 is a side elevation illustrating the members of my improved construction of cuff link as set into a cuitl at an angle'to each other, the cuff being illustrated in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a greatly enlarged view illustrating a thimble as having been drawn up from sheet stock and illustrating in dotted lines the head, neck and base portions as formed from this thimble member.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation illustrating the ball member of the cuff link.
Figure t illustrates the socket member of the cuff link.
Figure 5 illustrates the two members of the link as connected together to receive a universal adjustment by the ball and socket joint by means of which these members are connected.
It is found in the practical construction of cuff links of advantage to provide such a link which is formed or two members connected together with a universal joint so that they7 may swing at any desired angle to each other and also to connect these members of the culi" link together permanently. so that they can not be disconnected and lost one from the other; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention showing one construction of culi link by which these advantageous results maj.v be obtained With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the thimble member which is drawn up from sheet stock into the form illustrated in Figure 2, the body portion of this thimble being reduced as at 11 to provide a hollow or tubular shank portion 12 having a LINK.
1, 1924. Serial No. 747,1879.
hollow-ball-shaped head 13 at its inner end,
its outer end being flaring as at 14 to provide a seat or base with an edge flange 15 which may be rolled over the ornamental outer por tion 16 to retain it in position thereon.
The socket member as best illustrated in Figure 4., is very similar to the ball member, it being provided with a reduced neck portion 17, an outer base 18 having an edge flange 19 adapted to be turned over the ornamental head member 2O for retaining it in position therein, the inner end of this shank 2O being primarily formed similarly to the head 13 of the ball member, its inner end portion, however, being cut ofi providing a socket 21 with a thin edge portion 22. This socket portion is formed and shaped to receive the ball head 13 of the opposite meniber and the edge 22v of the socket member is drawn out thin and as this socket is of a depth greater than one-halt the diameter of the ball the edge 22 is turned over and closed about the ball thus permanently yet yieldably connecting these two members of the cuilI link together, whereby they are adapted to swing at any desired angle relative to each other and conform accurately to the shape of the cuff and as they are perma nently attached or connected together they can not be separated and lost, My improved forni of cuil1 link renders a link very practical in construction and is etective in its operation.
The 'foregoing description is .directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire 1t to be understood, that I re serve the privilege or' resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined `and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A culi link comprising two spaced apart bases, each of said bases having an integral continuous tubular shank of relatively small diameter extending a substain tial distance from one of its faces, a spherical enlargement at the end of one ot said thanks and the other of the shanks terminating in a partially spherical socket permanently inclosing said enlargement.
2. A cuil" link, Vcomprising two spaced apart bases, one of said bases having a shank extending from one of its faces and terminating in a Spherical enlargement at one of its ends, the base, Shank and enlargement being made of a single piece of meta-1, the other of' said bases having a Shank extending from one or" its faces and terminating n a Socket in which the spherical member s permanently secured attaching the bases together, the last nalned base, shank and socket beingmade of a snge piece of metal.
n testimony whereog I a'I'Hx my signature.
