Description

Patentes. July 13, 1926.
UNITED STATES "PATENT oFFlcE.
GEORGE cLAUsIn-e,
ramt,
F PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 THE VULCAN LAST COM- 0F PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, A CORPORATON OF OHIO.
LAST.
Application led March 276, 1924. Serial No. 701,989.
My invention relates to lasts.
It is my object to provide a hinge last -in which the link and pins are `non-resilient, but in which there is a supplementary resilient element interposed so as to give the requisite resistance to movement of the last parts from collapsed to extended position or vice-versa.
It is a further lobject of my invention to provide a hinge last in which the connecting and anchoring elements hold the parts to one another `and are independent of the element which resists the movement of the parts. It is a further object in such a com- 15bination to provide that the anchor centers will be below the pivotal center about which the last parts move when the last parts are expanded and above when they a e in colla sed position.
y eferring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a section through expanded position.
' Figure 2 is a section through the last in collapsed position.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the plates and springs connectin the last halves.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of one of the plates.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 is the heel part of a last and 2 is the toe part. These two parts rockgupon one an- Aother through a knuckle joint consisting of a semicircular projecting portion 3 and a corresponding concave portion 4.a The heel portion of the last is cut away as at 5 to ermit of thecollapsing of the last. When 1n expanded position the faces 6 of the last are in engagement with one another to limit the movement of the last parts. The last parts are cut away as at 7 and 8 in the toe and heel parts respectively to permitlof the accomodation of the plates andspring. The connecting plates are designated@ and are provided at eyes 10, through which are passed preferably -non-resilient pins 11 which work in the slots 12 in elongated eyes 10.
1 pr fer to use a pair of these plates spaced from one another and having interposed therebetween a. spring with hooked ends 13 and a bent central portion 14. These hooked ends are hooked over the pins 11, so that the tension of the spring serves to hold the parts together and to resist any increase in the length of the line between the last in connecting means in either end with/elongated the centers of the pins, which ioccurs when the parts pass over dead center. l This center is designated 15. It is obvious that the line joining the centers of the pins 11 passes .over this center when the parts are moved from one position to another.
lVhenrthis movement 11 will move relatively to links 10.
The pivotal point indicated 'on the drawings/is only approximate, but it is accurate sufficiently to illustrate the principleof conthe connecting takes place the pins struction, as the drawings are not drawn to scale. line drawn betw en the centers of the points of attachment which in a sense is the equivalent of the pivotal point. l
l. desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a last, a heel part, a toe part, means to pivot said parts one onthe other, means connecting said parts, means to anchor said the respective parts, and anindependenty resilient means connecting said anchoring means and adapted to resist the movement of said parts from one position to another and to hold them anded or collapsed position, ing means being adapted movement relative to said anchoring means. 2. In a last, a heel part, a toe part, means to'pivot said parts one on the other, means connecting said parts, means to anchorx said connecting meanshin independent resilient means connecting said anchoring means and adapted to resist the movement of said vparts from one'positionv said connect- The fundamental idea is to have the ass over the dead center to have lateral the respective parts, an l toanotherandpto hold them in either ex- -\sg.id last parts being cut awayto receive and enclose said severa arts.
3. In a last2 a heepart and a'ftoe part arranged'to pivot upon one another and to be moved from collapsed to expanded position orvice-jversa, non-resilient anchor -p-ins lin the respective last parts a plate connecting said ins andiparts an' pins, an a spring hooked over said pins mounted on the in length.
adapted to maintain the parts in their respective positions or to resist the movement thereof, said plate having elongated slots in which said pins move to permit the spring to flex when the parts are moved from' one position to another.
4. In a last, a heel part, a toe part, means to permit the pivoting of said parts one on the other about a given point, means for connecting .said parts to one another adapted to have lateral movement on the points of support of the connecting means on the last parts, means to support thev respective ends of the connecting means in the last parts, said connecting means being so arranged that a line drawn between the centers of the points of connection with the last parts will pass over said pivotal point when the parts are moved from one position to another, said line lengthening` as the parts move from one point to another and shortening as the parts assume the expanded or collapsed position, and resilient means havin either end associated with said points o connection whereby the resilient means will be lexed when the line between said pointsincreases 5. In a last, a heel part, a toe part, said parts being adapted to rock one on the other,
anchor ins in the respective parts of the last, lin s mounted thereon having elongated eyes in the ends thereof, and a spring hooked to each' of said pinsiand located between said links. A
6. In a last, a heel part, a toe part, said parts being adapted to rock one on the other, I
adapted to hold them together and resist..
their movement from one position to another, said resilient means consisting of a spring member having a depressed center portion and hooked ends mounted on pins carried by the respective parts of the last, and anchored pins for the ends of the spring member. l
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature.
