SHADE HOLDER.

This invention relates to a shade-holder, shade, socket-cover or the like, including a usually in the form of a ring, having a flange provided with a plurality of openings, and a plurality of pendent-members, each having a portion of relatively small diameter inserted in one of said openings, and a neighboring end portion of larger diameter, the device having means for preventing the escape oft-he pend ent-member from said flange.

The principal object of the invention is to secure the pendent-members in said openings in the flange of such a device, and to limit the lateral movement of saidpendentmembers in the respective openings.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.

Fig. 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of a broken-away one-half of a shade-holder to which my invention is applicable.

Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a crosssection of the same illustrating the manner in which the various parts, including pendants and the keeper ring, are assembled.

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same showing the keeper-ring expanded into underlying engagement with the end portions of the pendants.

. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the keeper-ring expanded as in Fig. 3.

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of keeper for the chainpendants.

Fig.6 is a view similar to Fig. 4:, showing said modified form of keeper.

Fig. 7 is a plan view of said modified form of keeper detached.

Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 5, showing the keeper-ring applied to the outer side of the series of chain-pendants.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, I have shown a shadeholder comprising a ring-shaped body, 1, screw-threaded to engage a correspondingly threaded portion of the sleeve of an incandescent electric lamp-socket (not shown), or the like, and having a laterally projecting flange, 2, terminating in a rim, 3, forming a seat for a lamp shade indicated by dotted lines, at, in Fig. 2, said rim having means. as screws, 5, for securing the shade in said seat.

The laterally projecting flange, 2, is provided with a circular series of circular openings, 6, severally adapted to receive pendants, 7, each having an end-portion, 8, of larger diameter than the neighboring portion, 9, of the pendant, the end-portion, 8, being of a size adapted to pass through the respective opening, 6, in the flange, .1.

The pendants may be of any desired form or style having an end-portion, 8, and neighboring portion, 9, of the character described.

It the pendants, 7, are bead-chains, as shown, and the end members, 8, are links of maximum diameter, the chains'can be passed downwardly through the respective openings, 6, or the end members or links, 8, can be passed upwardly through the respective openings, the chains in either case being caused to occupy the respective openings in the position shown in Fig. 2.

As a means for securing the respective chains, and limiting their lateral movement, in the respective openings, I employ a keeper-ring, 10, interposed between the ringshaped body, 1, and the pendants occupying the respective openings, 6.

This ring is preferably formed of sheetmetal upwardly convexed in cross section as shown in Fig. 2; and after the parts have been assembled as shown in said figure with the pendants, 7, occupying the respective openings, 6, and the keeper-ring so interposed between said body, 1, and said pend? ants, the keeper-ring is pressed out flat, as shown at 10 in Fig. 4, whereby it is expanded in with and forced into underlying engagement with the end-portions, 8, of the pendants, as shown in said figure.

The keeper-ring thus flattened and expanded covers more or less of'the openings, 6, so that the end portions, 8, of the pendants cannot escape through the respective openings.

1 have shown the invention applied to a shade-holder, but if desired the rim, 8, may be omitted and the device used as a shade, socket-cover or the like.

In Figs. 5, 6 and 7, I have shown the keeper in the form of a split spring-ring, 11, in underlying engagement wit-h the end beads, 8, on the chains inserted through the til) openings, 6, in the flange, 2, partly closing said openings and removably securing the respective chains therein.

The ring. 11, is normally of circular form, but due to its resilient nature can be loreibly distorted as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 7, to permit ot its insertion within the circular series of chains, after which the ring is permitted to expand to normal form. thereby seating the ring in underlying engagement with the end beads on the respective chains.

If desired, the keeper-ring, 11, may be adapted to embrace the series of chains on the outer side as shown in Fig. 8.

I do not wish to be limited to the constructions shown and above described, as, for certain purposes of the invention, various changes may be made in the form and arrangement of various parts of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.

hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described including a supporting body having a laterally projecting flange provided with perforate openings therethrough, a plurality o1" pendants severally having an en ,l-portion of greater width than the neighboring portion of the pendant, said end portions being of a size adapted to pass through said openings respectively, and a keeper in underlying engagement with said end portions of pendants occupying said openings, and partly closing said openings.

2. A device of the class described including a central body having a laterally projecting flange terminating in an upturned rim forming a seat for a lan'ipshade. means lor securing a lamp-shade in said seat, said flange being provided with a plurality of perforate openings therethrough between said rim and said central body, a plurality of pendants severally having an end-portion of greater width than the neighboring portion of the pendant, said end-portions being of a size adapted to pass through said openings respectively, and a keeper-ring in underlying engagement with said end-portions of pendants occupying said openings.

3. A device of the class described including a central body having a laterally pro jecting l'lange terminating in an upturned rim forming a seat for a lamp-shade, means for securing a lamp-shade in said seat, said flange being provided with a plurality of perlt'orate openings thcretl'irrmgh between said rim and said central bodyJa plurality oi pendants severally having an end-portion of greater width than the neighboring portions of the pendant. said endportions being o'lt' a size adapted to pass through said openings respectively, and a keeper-ring extending from said central body into underlying engagement with said end-portions ot' pendants occupying said openings, and partly closing said openings.
