UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. FRED COX, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO H. F. COX COMFANY, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATIQN OF MICHIGAN.
. FILING Application filed August This invention relates to a drawer construction having particular reference to the construction of filing drawers wherein various papers or other memoranda are adapted to be filed for convenient access whenever desired. It is an object and purpose of the present invention to construct a novel follower for drawers of this character which may be readily operated back and forth from the front end of the drawer and which at all times maintains a fixed angle to the vertical. A further object of the invention is to pro vide the front end of the drawer at its rear side with a novel means whereby the papers filed in the drawer are not pressed against the rear side of said front end but the fore- .most paper, card or other material filed is held a distance back from the front end of the drawer and at a convenient angle so that it is always readily seen and adapted for ready inspection. A further object of the invention is to provide in this construction a pocket directly back of the front end of the drawer in which various indicating cards of smaller size or other indicia relative to or informative of the contents of the drawer may be placed. All of these novel features are attained by structure which is readily made in an economical manner from sheet metal chiefly, whereby economy in manufacture is also made a feature of the invention For an understanding of the invention by means of which these ends are attained, ref erence may be had to the following descrip tion taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the filing drawer made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation with part in sec tion, showing the operating crank for moving the follower back and forth in said drawer, and
Fig. 3 is a verticaltransverse section substantially' on the plane of line 33 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The drawer is made of sheet metal and may be of any preferred construction. As shown it includes a base 1, a front end 2 a back end 2*, the front end at its wer deal. and upper edges being turned DRAWER.

upon itself to make securing lips 3, the purpose of which will later appear. The bottom 1 does not extend the full width of the drawer but at each edge is turned upwardly for a short distance, as indicated at l, thence horizontally outward, as shown'at 5, the sides 6 of the drawer being turned upwardly from the outer edges of the sections 5 and terminating in channel portions 7 with which the drawer guides are associated for maintaining the drawer in a suit able casing. This is a preferred construction of the drawer but the invention is not in any sense limited to this particular con struction.
At the front end of the drawer and directly over the bottom 1 a block 8 is located, having a central opening interiorly threaded with which a fitting 9 is associated, the same at its rear end having a reduced extension 9" extcriorly threaded to pass through the block 8 andmake a secure connection, it being understood that an opening is made in the front end 2 of the drawer for the passage of said part 9. A rod 10 extends lengthwise of the drawer in the lower part thereof in the trough formed by the base 1 and the vertical portions at. This rod for the greater portion of its length is provided with a spiral thread. of long pitch. The rod at its front end passes through the fitting 9 and is formed at its end with a squared section 11, the fitting at its front end being bored out to make an opening considerably larger than the diameter of the rod. The rod is retained in the fitting 11 by a wire 12 which is seated in complementary grooves made around the rod and in the opening in the fitting through which the rod passes.
The follower comprises a sheet metal plate 13 which extends downwardly and forwardly at an angle to the vertical to the bottom of the drawer being formed at its lower edge with a horizontal rearwardly turned flange 14 which rides against the upper side of the base 1 or in close proximity thereto. A block 15 of metal is permanently secured to the rear side of the follower above the flange 14 and has an opening therethrough threaded to correspond with the thread on the rod 10 so that by rotating said rod 10 the follower may be moved back and forth. the drawerjn accordance with the disco 1 4. I res. at tits The red adapted to be rotated by a crank 16 (see Fig. 2) which ,is provided .with pavsocket 17 to fit Vo'vr'the s 'uare'd'end lljo'f the rod.
