Description

UNITED STAT Eerneut OFFICE.
WILLIAM TEEGARDEN, OF HIGGINSPORT, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT 'IOv GEORGE TEEGARDEN, Ol? SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT lN HUBS FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,!23, dated January 26, 1875; application liied July li, 1874.
To alljwhom 1it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TE'EGARDEN, of Higginsport, county of Brown and State -of Ohio, haveinvented certain Improvements' in Hubs for W'heels, of which the following is a specilieatiou:
My invention relates to hubs of wheels for vehicles; and consists in the arrangement zuid use of one or more sets of friction-rollers in a. wheel-1mb for the purpose ot' lesseriing the l'rietion between the axle and wheel, and of .dispensing with the use of lubricating-oils.
Figure 1 is a, perspective view ot' my improved hub. Fig. 2 is o. longitudinal section through the middle of the sume. 'Fig 3 is au end view of the same.
D is a square wooden huh, into which spokes are tenoned 0i' otherwise secured :it d. On each end of the hub Dis a broad metal hund, E, whiclroverlzips the said huh sullieientiy to permit of lugs O being fastened to it. These lugs are arranged in pairs zuound'the inside of the bonds E. Between the lugs of eneh poil' is a `small pulley or frictionroller, B, :w
ranged as shown in the drawing. Any numher of such rollers greater than two nia-y be used, though I have shown four iu my druwing. The axle A of the vehicle passes hetweeu and is supported upon these rollers il, which are so adjusted as to support t-he entire weight of the axle und keep the same out ot' Contact with the hub. As will be readily seen, the friction between axle and wheel is thus reduced to n minimum, and the use oi' oil, which so often freezes or dries up, or catches dirt, is entirely done away with.
i do not elnim, broadly, the use ot' frictiourollers iu n, wheel-hub, as I am aware thuis they have been used before; but
What I do claim as my invention is- A wooden hub,.in combinnt-ion with lugs C C nud friction-rollers B B, substantially as shown 1und described.
