SAND-BAND FOR VEHlCLE-AXLES.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,435, dated July 7, 1885.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL HEFFLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Iniprovenient in Axles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invent-ion relates to an improvement in axles; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an axle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed sectional view.
A represents a wooden axle of the common construction, and B represents metallic spindles, that are secured on the ends thereof. These spindles are provided near their inner ends with shoulders a, that enter annular rings 1), that project from the inner ends of the hubs of the wheels. At the inner ends of the shoulders a the spindles have annular walls a, on which are formed the outwardlyprojecting sand -bands (I, that extend over the rings Z) to the inner ends of the hubs. The rings b have their inner ends, that bear against the walls 0, flanged, as shown, and by means of this construction sand and dirt are prevented from working in between the hubs and the spindles,and thus avoid wear thereon. The spindles B extend inwardly a suitable distance from the annular walls 0, and on their inner ends are formed grooves c. The under sides of the spindles, at their inner ends, are provided with circular recesses f. I
D represents a steel truss having enlarged heads 9, that fit in the recesses f of the spindles. Washers hare interposed between the axle and the truss, near the ends of the truss, and the truss is secured below the under side of the axle by the bolts i and nuts k. The headed ends of the truss are secured in the recesses in the spindles by means of clamp yokes Z, that bear in the grooves e. In the center of the axle, in the under side thereof, is recessed a metallic block, in, that has a threaded central opening. In this opening is placed a screw, it, having a head, 0, and a bearing-point, p, that enters a conical recess in the center of the truss. By turning the screw to the left the truss is bowed downwardly and its tension on the spindles and the axle increased. By turning the screw to the. right the opposite effect is caused. In the outer ends of the wooden spindles are secured bolts r, that are adapted to receive nuts .9 for securing the wheels on the spindles.
An axle thus constructed is exceedingly strong, is simple in constructio11,and the spindles are secured in such a manner as to provide against the possibility of their turning or working oii'.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The axle havingils spindle provided with the annular walls 0, and the sandbands d,fit-
ted to the walls, in combination wit-h the hubs having the annular rings Z1, secured therein and projecting outward, and flanges extending from the ends of the rings and working against the walls 0, the sand-bands (2 projecting beyond the walls over the rings 1), for the purpose set forth.
2. The axle having its spindles provided with the shoulders (I, and annular walls 0 in rear thereof, in combination with the hubs having the annular rings 12 projecting from its inner ends over the shoulders 01., flanges on the ends of the rings working against the walls 0, and sand-bands d,secured to the said walls and projecting outward over the rings I; nearly to the inner ends of the hubs, for the purpose set forth.
