UNITED 'sra'riss BOY WL scnwnrxnit, or LANsnALE, PENNSYLVANIA.-
LIGHTING Application filed May 2,
This invention relates to lighting fixtures and, more particularly, to means for fastening electric sockets to side-Wall fixtures.
Despite the fact that electricV lamp sockets are supposed to be adequately insulated and that porcelain fixtures, such as side-wall fixtures, to which they 'maybe'attached, may be of porcelain which isan insulating material itself, nevertheless the authorities in many localities will not approve a xture of this character if the lamp-socket is attached to the fixture by an exposed metal fastening. The objection arises because of may have one hand on the fixture and another hand on a lavatory faucet, as fixtures of this character are very generally used in bath rooms and lavatories.
To overcome the foregoing defect and to obviate the necessity of yproviding unsatisfactory insulating fastenings in fixtures of thischaracter, as well as to meet the requirements laid down by the :authorities without having to provide a special construction of socket, I have devised an improved fastener for securing the socket to the fixture, whether the socket be seated inthe. fixture, or, supported by a bracket as is commonly done in electric fixtures of the candle type. l
My improved fastener 'oriconnection is, in its broadest aspect, an attaching means `which is countersunk in Athe porcelain fixture in such fashion that there is no projecting metallic part which may be touched by the fingers of any one tak-ing hold of the fixture or turning the lamp on or off. In its secondaryraspect, my inventionembodies a screw adapter, plug, or bushing, which is of a size enabling it to be screwed into the.V
nipple.' on the bottom of the lamp socket or on the bracket which supports the lamp socket in Vthose welll known constructions which are ordinarily intended for connection to a tubular arm or fixture, combined witha` screw which passes through aY hole in the porcelain fixture and is countersunk so that no part of the connecting screw is exposed. Preferably, a gasket of fiber or of Y rubber is used in connection with the socket or with the bracket which supports the socket, to afford a more or less flexible seatV so that the lamp socket will be firmly secured and yet will not tilt when the screw is tightened. Porcelain fixtures sometimes have irregularities at the point where the socket or the bracket is intended to rest and,

at this point. By using the gasket, a. secure connection is attained.
No claim is made to the socket or its supporting bracket or to the nipple for the indeed, there sometimes exists aconcavity socket or bracket as these are well known Y v constructions, it beingy the purposey of the invention to utilize well known constructions 1n that respect.
'Ihe design ofthe porcelain bracket is not. claimed herein as both designs disclosed-in the drawings aresetforthin design applications copending herewith. f f
Certain embodiments of the present invention are hereinafter describedand claimed and are disclosed in the accompanyingdrawings in which: Y
Figure l is a front elevation, the porcelain fixture and the gasket being in section;
Figure 2 is a side eleva-tion, partly in section; i' y Y vFigure 8 isa d tail bottomview of the bracket and bushing; x f
Figure 4f is a detaill perspective ofthe lower part ofthe bracket; o v v gigure f's al similar view of thebushing; an
Figures 6 and 7 areviews corresponding, respectively,'to Figs. 1 and 2, showing the invention applied to a. socket which rests directly on the fixture.
A side wall porcelain fixture such as may Vbe used in a bath room or lavatory, is shown in Figs. l and 2 at 1. An ordinary electric lamp socket 2 is supported by a two-part adjustable bracket 3 of wellknown construe tion.` The bracket 3 vis provided with an in` t ternally screw-threadedy nipple t which, as
shown, is adapted to screw onto the end of a tubularpwall fixture, according'to present practice. Instead of modifyingthe bracket section 3 which vhasthe nipple'ii, I provide means whereby this well known commercial construction may be used without modification, in carrying out my invention.
VlVith that' end invview, I provide an externally Vscrew-threaded adapter or bushing 5 which screws into the nipple 4 andis provided with a' slot 6 across its bottoniI for the convenient application of a screw-driver so that it may be screwedv into the nipple 4. The bushing 5 is provided with an internal screw-threaded hole 7.
The fixture l has an opening 8 extending vertically through its lower part and communicating at its upper end with the concavity 9 in the fixture. In the lower part of the fixture 1 is a conca-vity or countersink 10 with which the communicates. .A screw 11 which passes through the opening 8, has its upper part engaged with the screw-threaded hole 7 of the bushing or adapter 5. The head of the yscrew lies in the countersink 10 so that it is completely protected and cannot be touched by the fingers of anyone touching the fixture 1 or turning the electric lamp on or off. f
A gasket 12 may be provided as a seat for the lower end of the section 3 of the lamp bracket but it is not necessary to use this gasket in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 vand 2, although it is preferable to do so as the gasket provides for suitable seating of the bracket and enables the screw 11 to be drawn up tightly to effect ysuoli seating without likelihood of the bracket and socket assuming an in clined position 'or of getting loose.
vlamp or electric bulb will appear just above the cup 14. This form of lamp socket is usually provided with an internally screwthreaded nipple 15 projecting downwardly from its base. As previously described, I rovide a bushing or adapter 5 such as shown in Fig. 5 and a screw (although a shorter one) l1 which enters the hole 7 in the bushing and passes through a hole 8 in the bottom of the cup 14:. There is a concavity or countersink 10 to guard the head of the screw, as previouslydescribed. As shown byv dotted lines at 13 in Fig. 6, a short candle could be used in connection with the embodiment of Figs. 6 and 7 but this is not opening 8V means being independent of the aforesaid bracket and extending through the said bracket into the concavity and operable from the exterior of said bracket and countersunk on the exterior thereof.
2. In a side wall lighting fixture, the combination with the xtu're proper having a base adapted to lie flatwise against the side wall and provided with a bracket extending laterally therefrom, said bracket being pro vided with a concavity, of a lamp socket having an attaching device located within said concavity, and an adjustable screw for said attaching device, said adjustable screw being independent of the aforesaid bracket and extending through the said bracket into the conca-vity and operable from the exterior of said bracket, the bracket having a countersink which houses the head of the screw.
3. In a side wall lighting fixture, the combination vwith the fixture proper having a base adapted to lie fiatwise against the side wall and provided with a bracket extending laterally therefrom, said bracket being provided with a concavity, of a lamp socket having an attaching device located withinV said concavity, a gasket interposed between the attaching device and bottom of the concavity, and adjustable fastening means for said attaching device, said fastening means being independent ofthe aforesaid bracket Vand extending through said bracket into the concavity and operable from the exterior of the bracket, said fastening means serving `taching device provided with an internally screw threaded nipple located in said concavity, an externally screw threaded bushing or adapt-er engaged with the internal screw threads `of said nipple, and a fastening screw engaged with the interior of said bushing and connecting the bushing to the bracket, said fastening screw extending through said bracket and operable from the exterior theren of, the bracket being provided withy a counter-sink which houses the head of the screw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
