METHOD OF MAKING CONTAINERS.
Application filed December 23, 19%. Serial 1W0. 77,286.
The invention relates to a method of makingcontainers, and more particularly to fibre containers and the method of making and securing the head to the siding forming the body or coverof such containers.
The object of the invention is to provide a fibre container in which the head is firmly secured to the siding by a sheet metal band and in which the band provides a large bearing and supporting surface for the head so as to provide a very strong construction.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view showing the initial position of the parts in the forming apparatus before attaching the head;
Figs. 2 and 3 are views similar to Fig. 1, showing intermediate positions of the parts in the forming apparatus during the attachment of the head;
Fig. 4. is a detail sectional view showing the final position of the parts in the forming apparatus;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view through a section of the container embodying the invention. l
The subject-matter of the invention relates to the method and means employed in connecting the head to the siding of the body or cover of the container, and since it is equally applicable for either the cover or body of the container, the container body alone has been shown in detail for the purpose of explaining the invention.
The siding 6 for the container is of fibre tubing, either of pressed ulp or a number of wrappings of paper or fibre sheets, and is generally in the form of cylindrical or conical tubing.
The head 7 is of fibre, consisting of one or more paper or fibre sheets or laminations, with one or more of these laminations, as 8, bent at an angle adjacent its edge to form a dished or flanged head having an annular flan e 9.
T e metal sheathing and clamping band 10, preferably of thin sheet steel or other suitable sheet metal, is made up in the form of a band having an outwardly extending base flange 11 with the main body portion of the band inclining upwardly and outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, with a slightly curved outer edge 12.
To secure the above-named parts together, the siding is placed over an anvil 13, preferably in the form of an expandible chuck, YIWhICh finally grips the interior of the sidin and forms a support. for the head. T e siding is clamped between the anvil and an external contractible chuck, 14 The dished head, with the flange 9 e xtend1n upwardly, is placed within the sldlng, as s own in Fig. 1, and a cylindrical plunger 15 is moved down so as to clamp the head against the anvil 13. The band 10 is then placed in position ontop of' said.
head and 'within the flange.
The chuck 14 and the plunger 15 cooperate to form an annular space 16, the sides 17 of the chuck at the lower end of this space being curved inwardly toward the siding. Concentric annular forming tools 18 and 19 work in this space and are moved downwardly in any suitable manner to accomplish the forming operation. The tool 18 has a curved lower edge 20 and it moves down with thetool 19 to the position shown in Fig. 2 to curl over the edge 12 and move it down over the outer part of the siding. Thereafter a further movement of the tool 18 presses the curled edge of the band 10 into the sidin and forcesa part 21 of the siding and the ange of said head adjacent thereto laterally against the head, as shown in Fig. 3, and clamps the flange 9 to the siding, and thereafter the tool 19 is moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, so as to force the part 22 of said band down into engagement with the base flange 11 of said band so as to form a relatively wide reinforced flange against which the head abuts to form the completed closure.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specific.
form or manner of constructing the parts except as such limitations are specified in the fibre container which consists in clamping the siding of the container and a head in position, inserting the outwardly extending ase flange of a sheet metal band within the siding, which band has a body portion inclining outwardly over that part of the sid ing extending beyond the head, then bendin the outer portion of said band over the si ing and forcing the extended edge of the siding laterally over the head, and then bending that portion of the band between the base and the extended edge of the sldlng against the base flange of said band.
2. The method of making a reinforced fibre container which consists in clamping the sidin of the container'and a dished hea inserted into an end of the siding in position so that the siding and. the main part of the head are held a ainst movement and l5 inserting the outwar 1y extending base flange of a sheet metal band within the siding, which band has a body portion inclining outwardly over that part of the siding extending beyond the head, then bending the outer portion of said band over and into clampin en a ent with the flan of. said hea an t e extended edge of t e siding and forcing said extendedof the siding laterally over the head,
ed e and then bending that rtion of the band between the base and t e extended edge of ]the dSiding against the base flange of said In testimony whereof, I afiix m signature.
