A TTORNEY-f Patented June 29, 1926.
UNITED STATES EDWIN 'F. HULBERT, OE MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO THE MASTER PACKAGE CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
METHOD OF MAKING CONTAINERS.
Application filed October 10, 1925. Serial No. 61,851.
The invention relates to the method of securing the cover head to the siding or main body of a container.
The object of the invention is to so form and treat .a metal band associated with the siding of the container as to form a reinforced mouth for the container, capable of receiving a flat head which is secured to the container by crimping over a part of the reinforced mouth against the outer-side of the head.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the invention, with the head secured in place, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the initial position of the band in the first forming apparatus;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the band after being acted upon' by the first forming apparatus;
Fig. 4 is a. detail sectional view of apparatus used for a subsequent step in the method of forming and attaching the band to the container.
The siding 5 for the container. is of fibre tubing, either of pressed pulp or a number of wrappings ofpaper or fibre sheets, and is generally in the form of cylindrical or conical tubing.
A strip of thin sheet metal, suchas sheet steel, is formed into a band 6 with the ini tial cross section shown in Fig. 2 to providea fiat portion 7 and a curved portion 8. \Vith the fiat portion 7 placed on the top edge of the siding 5, with its inner edge projecting beyond the inner side of the sidin, and the outer edge of the curved portion abutting the outer edge of the siding, a contractible chuck 9 is brought into clamping engagement with said siding and band. The upper end of the chuck 9 forms a guide for a cylindrical forming die or plunger 10 which has a relief surface 11 providing a space 11.
When the plunger-10 is moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3, that part 12 of the upper edge of the siding above the edge 13 of the band is forced outwardly and the fiat portion 7 of the band is simultaneously bent over the edge 13 and forced outwardly so that theparts assume substantially the form shown in Fig. 3.
'lhcreafter, the container in this partially formed condition is held by an external contractible chuck 14 and an internal expanding chuck 15, and while so held a plunger 16 is moved downwardly to finish the forming operation. -This plunger has an annular portion 17, working between the chucks, with a slightly curved lower edge 18 and a relief 19, and acts in conjunction with the annular recess 20 in the chuck. 15 to form the band and the siding into the finished mouth.
The reinforced mouth thus formed provides a recess 21 to receive the cover 22 of disk shape which abuts against the shoulder 23 formed by the lateral offset of the upper edge of the siding and band, and with the head in place a suitable tool is applied at intervals to the upper edge 24 of the mouth of the container, whereby parts 25 of said edge are bent over into engagement with the head so that the head is firmly secured within the mouth of the container between the shoulder 23 and the parts 25, and at the same time the upper edge of the band forms a wearing surface.
As shown, the container is in the form of a pail having a bail holder 26 secured to the siding and carrying a bail 27 The method above described of forming the head end of the container enables me to use thin sheet metal as a reinforcement, and to work this metal into its desired form without danger of cracking or splitting it.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specific form or manner of constructing the parts except as such limitations are specified in the claims.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. The methodof making-the head-securing mouth of a fibre container, which consists in placing a sheet-metal band having a flat inner ring portion and an outer depending portion about the top of the siding so that the flat inner ring portion rests upon the top of the siding and projects inwardly therefrom and the outer depending portion surrounds the siding, then bending the flat ring portion over the upper edge of said siding and forcing this bent-over portion and the edge of said siding laterally and thereafter further offsetting the banded edge of s end of a fibre container which consists in receiving wall and an annular metal-s placing a sheet-metal band having an inner ring portion'and an outer depending portion about the top of the siding so that the inner ring portion rests upon the top of the siding and'projects inwardly therefrom and the outer depending portion surrounds the siding, then bending said band and the siding adjacent thereto laterally and into contacting engagement with each other to form a metal-sheathed upwardly-extending headeat ed shoulder against which the cover abuts, placing a disk-shaped cover into the rein forced mouth and crimping over apart of the upper sheathed edge of the siding against the outer side of the head to clamp the head between said crimped-over part and said shoulder.
3. The method of making the head-securing mouth of a fibre container which consists in placing a sheet-metal band having an inner ring portion and an outer depending portion about the top of the siding, bending the inner ring portion and the siding adjacent thereto laterally, and then bending both sides of the band and the siding to form a laterally'offset cover-receiving ring and seat. o a
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature. I
EDWIN F. HULBERT.
