appaaaon nea nearer 1a was. serial no. eacaa 'lhe invention relatesto ber containers and to a method of making the same.
'lhe object of the invention is to provide a closure for, and a method of attaching this closure to, the ber siding forming the cover or body of the container, whereby the head is firmly secured to the siding and to a metal band which is clamped over the head with.`
a part of the siding.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. i
In Athe drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a closure embodying the invention,
f parts being broken away and parts'being shown in section; I
Figf2 is a detail sectional view showing the initial position of the container parts;
Fig. 3 is a view `similar to Fig. 2, showing an intermediate step in the method of attaching the closure;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the container closure when the assembling process is completed.
TheJ numeral of .the container, which may be of ressed pulp or a number of wrappings of ber or paper sheets, and is` generally a cylindrical or conical section.
The numeral 6 designates the ber head, usually made up of a number yof' laminations of paper or berl sheets.
The numeral 7 designates a band of thin sheet-steel, or other suitable sheet-metal,A
which is formed to provide annular head-Y receiving spaced ilanges 8 and 9, and a part l() with a slightly curved upper edge 10 eX- tends outwardly from the inner edge of the flange 9.
The head 6, with the band 7I attached thereto, is inserted into the siding -5 so that Y siding 5,
it rests on an anvil 11 which engages said and a clamping plunger 12 is moved down against the head to'hold it rml against the anvil 11, as shown in Fig; 2.
external contractible chuck 13 w ose parts have straight cylindrical surfaces 14 and a siding-engaging surface 15 oset from the surface 14 and joined thereto by a curved 5 designates the ber siding movement it bends the edge 10 of the band A over the inturned extension 17 ofthe siding and thereafter by continued longitudinal pressure this' is curled with the edge of the extension 17 of the siding into convolute form and at the same time a part 21 of said siding extension is 'forced down against the flange 9 and the flanges 8 and 9 pressed against the head and the head is thus firmly heldin place between the parts of the band and the inturned edge of the siding which, with the band, provides la very strong abutment to resist loads tending to force the head outwardly from the siding.
A facing 22 of paper may also be secured to the head and over the flange 8 when it is desired to prevent contact of the contents of the container with the metal b and.
What I claim as my invention 1s:
1. In a ber container, the combination with the ber siding and the ber head, of a sheet-metal `band having spaced flanges receiving the head and a part extending from the inner edge of the outer flange and extending over a part of the` siding projecting over the head.
2. In a ber container, the combination, with the ber siding and the ber head, of a sheet-metal band having spaced flanges receiving the head and a part extending from the inner` edge of the outer ange over a part of the siding. extendinginwardly overthe head7 and having its outer edge curled with the outer edge of the siding into a beaded edge.
In testimony whereof, I alix my signature.
EDWIN F. HULBERT.
