UNITED STATES ANNA B. JONES, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
CHRISTMAS TOY.
Application filed February 26, 1926. Serial No. 90,810.
This invention has relation to Christmas toys, and particularly to mechanical toys, having for an object to provide an improved toy capable of economical manufacture, and intended to appeal to all young children, being capable of being made of any light stiff substance, but preferably of tin.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as set forth in the appended claims.
Fig. 1 is a front view of the toy, partly in section, Fig. 2 is a vertical section, Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Figs. 4 and 5 show the operation of the floor-door.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1 designates an upright rectangular hollow body, the exterior of which is painted or marked to represent a chimney, and one side of the lower portion of which is provided with a fireplace opening 2, the lower part of which is provided with a vertical wall 3, painted to simulate a grate with coals of fire therein, and the upper part of which is provided with an outward projection or mantel 4, from which stockings i may be shown as suspended for filling, or filled.
Located above the fireplace opening in the hollow chimney is a horizontal partition or floor-door 5, forming the bottom of an upper loading chamber 6 adapted to hold candy or the like, and forming the top of a lower dumping chamber 7 wherein the candy is adapted to be dumped or deposited as will be explained. The floor-door 5 is hinged in rear at 8 and is capable of being moved downwardly as shown in clotted lines in Figure 2, and is normally held in horizontal position by means of cords 9, 9, provided with knots 10 or the like bearing against the bottom of said floordoor, the lower ends ofsaid cords being attached to a rotatable shaft or Windlass 11, the upper ends of the cords being attached to rear lugs 12 of avertical slide 13, working in a guideway 14, said slide being painted or decorated to simulate a Santa Claus 15, bearing a bag of presents, or an attachable and removable bag may be used.
The Windlass 11, is provided with a crank 16, upon rotation of which the indlass is rotated to wind the cords thereon, with the result that first the Santa Claus is caused to descend within the chimney, and thereafter, short attachment cords 17 of the main cords and the upper ends of which are at tached to the bottom of the floor door at 18 (said attachment cords having normally considerable slack therein), will become taut, and pull down upon the floor door to depress the same to the position shown in dotted lines as aforesaid, so that a load of candy or the like contained in the upper chamber of the chimney and inserted therein through a top opening 19 thereof and resting upon the floor door, will be dumped and deposited in the lower chamber of the chimney or in the grate of the fire place, the figure of Santa- Claus at the same time descending further within the chimney, and the descent of Santa Claus and the depression or opening of the floor door being both against the tension of coiled springs 20, the upper ends of which are attached to the top of the chimney and the lower ends of which are attached to therear lugs of the Santa Claus figure.
Upon release of the-crank, the crank shaft or windless and the cords will be released, and the springs 20 will act at once to pull upwardly upon said cords and restore the Santa Claus to normal raised position above the chimney and the knots of the cords will bear against the bottom of the floor door and restore the floor door to normal horizontal position.
A candy tongs 21 at the side of the chimney can be used by the child to remove the candy from the grate and restore or insert it again within the upper chamber of the chimney, and this can be repeated indefinitely by the child.
The working parts of the invention are concealed, so that the child is prevented from tampering with the same.
I claim 1. In a toy, an upright hollow body or chimney, provided with a lower fire place opening and a lower dumping chamber, and an upper opening for insertion of confectionery and the like, and an upper loading chamber, a transverse partition located in said hollow chimney and forming the bottom of said loading chamber and the top of said dumping chamber, an upright vertically reciprocatory slide carrying the representation of a Santa Claus or other figure and working in said chimney, and hand operated means for discharging confectionery in the loading chamber and resting upon said partition downwardly within said dumping chamber and for simultaneously causing said figure to descend within said chimney.
2. In a toy, an upright hollow body or chimney, provided with a lower fire place opening and a lower dumping chamber and an upper opening for insertion of con-fectionery or the like and an upper loading chamber, a transverse partition located in said hollow chimney and forming the bottom of said loading chamber and the top of said dumping chamber, an upright vertically reciprocatory slide carrying the representation of a Santa Claus or other figure and working in said chimney, and hand 0perated means for discharging confectionery in the loading chamber and resting upon said partition downwardly within said dumping chamber and for simultaneously causing figure to descend said chimney, and means adapted upon release of said hand operated means to restore said partition to normal position and said figure to normal position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANNA B. JONES.
