Description

' drawin Patented June 29,1926.
UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. BRAGG, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA; ETHEL S. BRAGG ADM'INIS'IRATRIX OF SAID CHA RLES W. BRAGG, DECEASED.
rm FOR rannrcs'.
' Application fil ed June 9, 1922. seri l- No. 567,006.
which is such that, following the forcing of the pin through aplurality of sheets of paper to its operative positlon, said sheets wi l resume and retain the normally smooth,
flattened-out, piled position they had before being secured together by the pin.
A further ob ect' of my invention is to.
have the shoulders forming the bend in said 'pin so located that one shoulder may be utilized for forcing the pin through the sheets, and the other for measuring and loeating the distance between the two perforations made by the pin.
Another object of m invention is to have such a pin so formed that it may be successfully constructed from a fiat strip of more or less resilient metal.
With these ends in view, my invention finds embodiment in certain" features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which the said objects .are attained, all as hereinafter fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In said drawing,-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a pin in which my invention finds its embodiment, shown in its operative position when securing to ether quite a number of sheets of vaper. orabric.
Fig. 2 is a similar view 0 a pin adapted for a lesser number of sheets. 7 Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Flg. 1."
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Flg. 2; and t Fig. 5 is a section of the piled sheets shown in Fig. -3, with the fastening pin therefor in the position vit occupies after making the first. perforation therethrough and for making the second perforation for securing'a pin thereto in its operative position.
.Similar characters of reference indicate the same 6 indicates a pin provided at one end parts in the several figures of the with a pointed member'Zand a head end membar 8, substantially in alinement therewith, between whichis a parallel offset'9, formed by connecting converging" bends forming shoulders 10 and 11, the shoulder 10 furnishing a stop for fixingthe distance between two perforations I2 and 13 to be made by the pointed end of the pin for securing it in its operative position for fastening .a numberofsheets .of paperl l and the shoulder .11 asa stop forthe thumb .and'fingers for pushing the pointed pin 7 through the paper. sheets. h f a The depth of the otl'set in the" pin differs with the size of the pin and the number of sheets it'is adapted for. That is to say, as the number of sheets to be secured by the pin increase, the greater should be the size of the pin for strength, and the greater the depth and length of its ofiset; as, for example, as shown in Fig. 2, where there are but two or three sheets of paper to be fastened, the size of the pin and the depth and length of its oflset are correspondingly small. Whereas, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, the size of the pin, its strength and the depth and length of the. offset are correspondingly increased to adapt the pin for the greater number of sheets to be secured together against accidental detachment. In this connection it should be noted that there maybe as many difieringsizes of pins as the sheets to be secured by such a pin differ in thickness as well as number.
In practice it is found that, for ushing the in through to make the first perforation in t e papers, the force required will project a portion of, if not the entire body member 9, through the perforation, and as a result of which the body portion 9 should then be withdrawn until the shoulder 10 is in the position shown in Fig. 5 i. e. nearest said perforation for locating the second perforation so that thereafter the sheets confined between the shoulders 10 and 11 may June 29 1926.
