' CIGARETTE PACKAGE.
Application filed February 5, 1925. Serial Io. 7,118.
My invention relates to-improvements in packages for cigarettes and other articles, of the type in which a ripping cord is provided to open the package. In packages of this type heretobefore provided, the ripping cord usually tears a very jagged cut,
and very often. the package will also tear laterally from the line on which the ripping cord is located, It is the primary object of my invention, to provide a simple and unique construction for .overcoming this difiiculty. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide a package-opening, ripping cord having one of its end portions anchored beneatha lacerable seal for the package, for instance, the ordinary revenue stamp of a cigarette package.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by theaaccompanylng drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sealed package constructed in accordance with myinvention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the upper end portion ofthe package, part of the contents being broken away to more clearly disclose the rippin cord and the reinforcing strips between w 'ch it is located.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating the package partly opened.
Figure 4 is a perspective viewshowing the package fully open. I
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the reinforcing strips between which the ripping cord is confined.
In the drawing abovebriefly described, a conventional form of cigarette package has been shown, including opposed vertical side walls 1, and a vertical edge wall 2, as well as a top 3 which is sealed by the usual stamp construction shown, the extremities of the and portions 5 are curv d. as t and he .passed through openings 9 in the walls 1,
' or other seal 4. Vertically spaced, closely wise secured to the walls 1 and 2. In the extremities of the end portions 6 turn upwardly as at 6', around and in close relation with said curved extremities 5".
Glued to the inner sides of the walls 1 and 2, between the strips5 and 6, or otherwise suitably secured to said walls, is a rip ping cord 7, the end portions of said cord being shown extended upwardly as at 8,
to the exterior of the package, and then anchored beneath the seal 4. By this arrangement, ulling of either end of the cord 7, will st tear the seal 4. Then the remainder of the cord will tear the package vertically and also tear it horizontally between the strips5 and 6, so that an upper corner of the package is cut loose from the major portion of the latter, providing a hinged cover C (Fig. 4) whose lower edge v ure it or the co-acting portion of the package, and it is obvious that when this cover' is swung open, the cigarettes or other contents of the package may be readily removed. If desired, the cover may of course 1ais reinforced by the strip 5, while the upper be entirely torn from the package, but this is not necessary. I Attention is directed to the fact that in package, the strips 5 and 6 effectively confine tearing of the package walls, to the line followed by the ripping cord 7, between said strips. It is not usually necessary that the vertical portions of the. cord be confined also between portions of the reinforcing strips, as in most instances, the grain of the paper permits it to tear easily and straight. However, if desired, it will be understood that the scope of the invention is such as to permit use of reinforcing strips on any wall or walls ofthe package, at opposite sides of the rippin cord. Whenever this is done, a substantia y clean cut is insured, instead of allowing jagged tearin as very often happens without the use 0 the reinforcing'strips.
addition to forming reinforcements for the cover C and the co-acting portion of said It will be seen from the foregoing that llO ferr d. f rm f construction herein disclo ed,
it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, modifications may be made.
1 claim:
1. A package formed of lacerable material and including opposed vertical side Walls, and a vertical edge wall at substantially right angles to said side walls, upper and lower closely related reinforcing strips within the package having their intermediate portions secured horizontally across said edge wall near the upper end of the latter, said strips having end portions extending horizontally across and secured to portions of said side walls, the extremities of the lower strip being turned upwardly around and in spaced relation with the extremities of the upper strip, and a ripping cord secured in the s ace between said strips and having upwar y directed end portions at the extremities of said strips, at least one memos of said end portions of the cord being ex- 2. A package formed of lacerable material and including opposed vertical side walls,
and a vertical edge Wall at substantially right angles to said side Walls, upper and lower closely related reinforcing strips Within the package having their intermediate portions secured horizontally across said edge Wall near the upper end of the latter, said strips having end portions extending horizontally across and secured to portions of said side Walls, and a ripping cord secured in the space between said strips and having upwardly directed end portions at the extremities of said strips, at least one of said end portions of the cord being extended to the exterior of the package.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiixedm si ature.
