JOSEPH I. KENNEDY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ERASER HOLDER.
Application filed September My invention relates to a holder for blackeboard erasers and has for its object totprovide a device for this purpose which will be strong, durable and cheap to manufacture and which, while taking a firm grip on the black-board structure, preferably on the chalk-rail of the blackboard, )reventing accidental displacement, will be capable of-being readily removed therefrom, if need be, for cleaningthe chalk-rail, fory example.
p A further object is to provide a device so constructed as to be sightly in appearance.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingy drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a View in perspective of the eraser holder shown as applied to the chalkrail of a black-board of common construction. i i
Fig. 2 is ac sectional viewon line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig 3' is a vvifew similar to Fig. 2 but showing the eraser receiving member as it is. about to be attached to the chalk rail, and
Fig. 4 is a View of the retaining member, separately, andas seen from the inner side of said member, that is the side which is toward the black-board when the device is in position on the chalk-rail. f
i Referring tothe drawing, the blackboard structurerisl shown as consisting of a blackboard 10 having a strip or bead 11 at its lower ledge to which isfastened the chalkrail 12. f
In accordance with my` invention the eraser is held on the chalk rail by means of a retaining member 13, composed of sheet metal of some resiliency, preferably, and consisting, in the form ofthe invention shown `in the drawing, of afront plate 14, end projections land a pair of attaching wings 16,16 which extendback of the front plate, that is between the front plate and the forward edge of the challerail, preferablyfromthe end edges ofthe front plate.
" These arrangements might be modified but are deemed particularlyssuitable for carrying out one of theprinciples of the invention, namely the provision of an eraser holderl attachable to chalk-rails of `differing cross-sectional configurations.
The wings 16, 16 are formed with-slots 17, preferably tapering, land terminating in circular enlargements 18. i'
A'lheseslotted wings are adaptedl toen gage with attaching `elements designed to be permanently fixed to the forward edge 2s, 1925. serial No. 59,128.
ence to round headed screws in order to ob-` tain a holding pressure, to the maximum extent, as between the retaining member and the black-board structure, resisting aeci-` i dental displacement of the retainingmember while Permitting it, nevertheless, to be removed when necessary.
This holding pressure may be developed,
through strain of the retaining member, in various ways.
Preferably, the wing 1G is bent toward the front plate 14, that is in the direction from the bend toward the inner end of the wing, while the wing 16 is given a slight bend outwardly. The retaining member is put over the heads of screws 19, with the heads extending through the enlargements 18 of slots `17, and is then moved to the left (Fig. 3). The wings are thus wedged against the bevels of the screw heads resulting in a frictional grip,-due to the taper of slots 17, a straightening or flattening outof thewings against the edge of the chalkrail, produced by the beveling of the screw n heads and, preferably, also, the development of a pressure between the front plate and the flat outer surfaces of the screw heads. The
strain taking place in the relatively stiff, but 4 slightly resilient retaining member, brings about a bind of the member against the chalk-rail which resists without preventing the detachment of the member from the chalk-rail, which, nevertheless, is readily accomplished by a sharp blow on the left hand end of said member. f
It will be understood that this spring grip engagement as between the retaining member and the black-board structure might be accomplished" by expedients somewhat different from those just described. For example, it is not essential that the screw heads should project far enough from the chalkmail to bear against the front plate,7
although this is desirable in order to increase the holding grip.
It will be observed thatthe screws are completely covered by the retaining member which adds to the appearance of the device i.
and diminishes the likelihood'. that it Will be taken off by some inquisitive child. The strength of the grip is sufficient to deter any* one from attempting tol remove the holder from the black-board without knowing' just how such removal is to be accomplished.
One important feature of the device is that it can be applied; to a chalk-rail of al*- most any cross-sectional configuration.
Other advantages, which will be apparent, are the low cost of manufacture and the ease with which the device may be applied to and removed from the black-board structure. Realizing the possibility of modification within the principles of my invention, I desire t'o cover the invention in allt embodiments within the scope ofthe appended claims.
