This invention relates to a sounding rattle and the principal objects of the same are to provide a simple and inexpensive whistle or sounding device adapted to be applied to a s rattle and to be operated easily without necessarily increasing the size of the rattle so as to provide what is really two toys in one.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a central sectional view of a toy constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Although the invention is capable of application in many forms, I have shown it as applied to a sphere of sheet celluloid cnsisting of two semi-spherical parts and 11 connected together in a well known way around the circumference at the largest oint. What I will call the lower one is provided with perforations 12 for the admission of air and it merely constitutes a cover for the part within. It can be ornaments and shaped in any desired way.
The upper part 10 of this casing is shown as of the same shape, although the shape is not material, and it is provided within it with a celluloid partition or center blank 13 which extends across the entire device to separate it into two compartments. It is provided with. a ring 14 located concentrically for holding a flexible oiled silk or other cloth collapsible bag 15 in the lower chamber. This collapsible bag is cylindrical in shape and its opposite end is cemented or otherwise secured in an air-tight manner around a bottom disc 16 so that it constitutes a bellows. \Vithin the bellows in the space between the bottom plate 16 and the partition 13 I place a large coil spring 17 for distending the bellows and holding the parts in the full line position shown in Fig. 1.
This bottom plate 16 is provided with two opposite sockets for receiving the bent ends of a pull loop 18. This pull loop consists of a celluloid wire bent up into the form shown or any other convenient form. It passes through two perforations 19 in the partition 13 and two perforations 20 in the upper part 10 of the casing. These latter perforations are surrounded by a patch 21 to finish the openings and prevent their being enlarged by the operation of the device.

I have shown this pull loop 18 as of loop-shaped form and connected with a rod ring 22, although, of course, any device can be provided for the purpose intended. The object of this struc-' ture is to permit the user to pull the pull loop for the purpose of contracting the bellows against the action of the spring. When it is released. and the spring pulls it out, air is forced inwardly through awhistle 23 passing through the plate 16 and a cap 24: which is perforated at 25. The air, of course, enters through the openings 12.
It will be obvious heavy articles 26 can be placed in the upper compartment of the casing so that it will serve as an ordinary rattle for the amusement of young babies and that as soon as the baby is old'enough to learn to pull on the rod ring the device will produce a sound in addition to the rattle. In this way a combined toy is provided suitable for children of widely different ages and it can be made attractive in appearance to interest such children as it is adapted for. It is light and consists of few parts, all of them protected within the ball casing so that they are not likely to get out of order for a long perio of time. The loop ring, where it passes through the upper hemisphere, is guarded in two places at a distance apart so that it is likely to remain in condition for operation for a long time.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not ish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described but what I do claim is 1. As an article of manufacture, a toy comprising tending across it dividing it into two compartments, said casing having a plurality of separated perforations therethrough in one compartment, a pull loop having a plurality of members extending through said perforations and guided thereby, the partition having a plurality of separated perforations for the pull loop also constituting guides therefor spaced apart, a plate connected with the end of the pull loop at a distance from the partition, a piece of fabric located in the that stones or other casing having a partition exother C(JDZPQIllllEll), extending around the plate, and secured to the partition to constitute a bellows, and a sounding device carried by said plate and located in such a as to be operated to produce a sound when the plate moves.

As an article of manufacture, comprising a casing having a partition extending across it, said casinghaving perfo rations therethrough, a pull loop extending through said perforations and guided there by, the partition hevin perforations for the pull loop also constituting guides therefor at a material distance from the first named guides, whereb; the pull loop is constrained to have rectilinear motion, a plate connected with the end of the pull loop at a distance from the partition, a piece of fabric extendinp; around the plate an secured to the partition to constitute a bellows, a spring with in the bellows for resisting the closing of the same by the pulling of the pi ll loop, and a sounding device carried by said plate and located in such a way as. to be operated to produce a sound when the spring restores the bellows to its distended position.
