UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. WADSWORTH, OF-TREMONTON, UTAH.
Box-sesame nnvron.
Application 'filed October 13, 1925. Serial Ito/62,824.
This invention relates to box sealin devices and has relation more particular y to a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in closing the ends of cartons, and it is an object of the invent on to provide a device of this kind WhlCh in its structure comprises no levers, eccentrics or the like.
Another object of the inventlon 1s to provide a device of this kind 'comprlslng a platform and a box or carton holder pivotally supported thereby and which, when swung below the platform, coacts with such platform to impose suflicient tension upon the closed end flaps of a carton or the l ke upon the holder to assure requisite eifective gluing of said flaps to close an end of the carton.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of thiskind wherein the holder or holders comprised therein, when not in use, are substantially confined below the platform and thus permitting the platform to be emplo ed without hindrance or obstruction forot er purposes, such as gluing, stencil work and the'like.
The invention consists in the details ofv important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more full set forth.
T e novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View in elevation lllustrating a box sealing device constructed 1n accordance with an embodiment of my inven tion' Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in per; spective of a holder showing a carton initially applied; U
Figure 4 is a view similar toF-igure 3 showing the flaps at an end of the carton partly folded;
Fi ure 6 is a sectional view taken sub-' stan t1ally on the line 66 of Fi Figure 7 is a view in of the holders unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, P denotes a platform of desired configuration and dimensions but herein disclosed as of a material length and rectangular in design, said platform being maintained in desired elevation by the supportlng legs 1 coacting in a conventional manner with the longitudinal marginal portions thereof. 1
The legs 1 at one side of the platformP are transversely ali ned with the legs at the opposite side an the lower portions of each pair of transversely aligned legs 1 are tied or connected by the cross members or beams 2. Disposed through the opposite end portions of t ese cross members or beams 2 and at desired points inwardly of the legs 1 are the bars or pi s 3 extending longitudinally of the platf dim P and substantially the entire length thereof, said rods or pipes 3 providing mountings for the holders H.
Each of the holders H comfprises atopor table 4 of a size and con guration to conform to the interior dimenslons of the end of a carton to be closed and de ending from the sides of said top or ta 1e 4, and at right angles thereto are theside perspectlve of one the top or table 4. The lower portions of 4 the arms 6 are freely mounted on a rod or pipe 3 whereby the holder is supported for swinging movement in a vertical direction, the mountings for the holder being so positioned of the arms that the top or table 4 closely approaches the under surface of the platform P when the holder is in upright vertical position, such space a being substantially equal to the overlying or overlapping end flaps F of-a carton C to be glued in closed assembly. Furthermore, it is to be noted that the rod or pipe 3 is positioned inwardly from the ad acent longitudinal margin of the platform P to'have the for- .end is removed therefrom.
ward edge of the top or table4 substantially or beam 8 and each extended end portion flush with the adjacent longitudinal edge has contact from below with a cross rod of the platform P when the holder is in its 10 connecting the lower end portions of the vertical upright position. 1 arm 6, said spring 9 imposing suflicient The arms 6 of the holder H are tied or tension to urge the. top or table 4 upwardconnected by the bracing or reinforcing ly for proper coaction with the platform P members 7 preferably positioned above and as hereinbefore referred to. below the rod or pipe 3. I To facilitate the functioning of the As herein disclosed, a battery of three springs 9, the arms 6 are provided with the holders H is positioned between each pair e10 gated openings 11 through which a bar of adjacent longitudinally spaced sup.- or pipe 3 is directed. When it is desired orting legs 1 althou' h,if desired, this numto drop a table or top 4 it is only necesr may be either increased or decreased. sary to step upon the coacting outer end Furthermore, it is to be noted that in the portion of a spring 9 and the desired fall assembly as disclosed in the accompanying of the top or table 4 as afforded by the drawings, the holders H are disposed along slots 11 will occur by gravity. both longitudinal marginal portions of the From the foregoing description it is platform P toassure a maximum output thought to be obvious that a box sealing from a single device. device constructed in accordance with my It is to be observed that when not in use invention is particularly well adapted for the holders will be raised to a substantially use by reason of the convenience and vertical upright position and at whichtime facility with which ,it may be assembled they are substantially entirely confined beand operated, and it will also be obvious low the platform P and thus permit such that my invention is susceptible of some platform to be readily and conveniently change and modification without departemployed for table purposes such as for ing from the principles and spirit thereof gluing operations, stenciling and the like. and for this reason I do not wish to be The construction of the holders H is such understood as limiting myself to the precise to offer a minimum of hindrance or obarrangement and formation of the several struction to the platform P when used for parts herein shown in carrying out my intable purposes. vention in practice except as hereinafter As is well known, cartons employed in .claimed. the packing of can goods-or the like are I claim received by the packer in flattened form 1. In combination with a latform, a with the end flaps free. With the use of my carton holder comprising a table, dependpresent device, a holder H is swung outing plates carried by the sides of the table, wardly and a carton C formed therearound arms extending from the plates, said arms and the flaps F at one end of the carton C having elongated openings, a member disfolded into overlying or overlapping relaposed through the openings in the arms to tion down upon the table'or top 4 of the support the arms for swinging movement, holder, glue or other adhesive having been said arms having lengthwise movement to first properly applied to the flaps. The the extent afi'orded b the openin s, a cross holder is then swun'g forwardly to its submember connecting tlie arms, an a spring stantially vertical upright position bringcontacting with said cross member from being the overlying or overlapping end flaps low for urging the arms upwardly. f F between the platform l and the top or 2. In combination with a latform and table 4 of the holder, the space a between a supporting structure there or, a carton said table or top 4 and latform P being holder comprising a table, depending plates such as to assure an e ective tension or carried b the sides of the table, arms expressurepbeing' imposed upon the overlying tending rom the plates, a bar carried by or overlapping flaps F to assure an efl'ec-' the supporting structure for the platform, tive gluing or-adhesive connection between said arms having elongated openin such flaps. After the 'glue or other adthrough which said bar extends to provi e hesive has pro erly set, the holder is swung a pivotal mounting for the'arms, the openoutwardly an the carton with its sealed ings in the arms permitting said arms to g have limited len hwise movement, a mem- Connecting the central portions of the her connectin t e arms, and an elongated cross members or beams 2 is an elongated spring carrie by the supporting structure member or beam 8 and bolted or otherwise for the platform and contacting with the attached to'said member or beam 8 at points connectin member from below. spaced lengthwise thereof are the elongated In' testimony whereof I hereuntio ,aiiix sprin members 9.
