UNITED STATES P CHESTER W. cun'rrs, Vor' enEENsEUEG, PENNSYLVANIA.-
ENVELOPE.
Application filed February 8, 1924. Serial No. 691,346.
This invention relates to envelopes or other containers, particularly to containers emplo ed for the transfer of valuable articles, suc for example, as pay envelopes. The 1 11- 5 vention will be described herein with partlcular reference to such usage, but it will. be understood that the invention is not so 11mited in its application being in fact capable of use for many other purposes.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a container of such form that it may encompass the valuable articles to be transferred and furnish means for sealed transport of the articles from one person to an- 15 other, -while at the same time providing duplicate record forms, one of which 1s nondetachably secured to said container and hence must accompany it, and the second of Y which may be detached fromthe container for the record of the person transferring the containers contents.
An, especial object of my invention is the supplying of a container for currency or valuable papers, which can be formed, together with duplicate receipt forms, from a single ord forms from each other, orA from the conl tainer. Furthermore, the sheet or blank is so v formed that it may-have the receipt forms .printed thereon previous to folding, without requiring that the printing be matched, the
seams being placed .so as to be outside of the 'area occupled by the printed forms.
` A further feature of the invention con- 845 sists in so arranging the said printed forms 'that the detachable form will lie above, and register with the non-detachable forms, so that by, the use of/copying-composition the 'v filling in of the 'i/1e form is accomplished si- ',multaneously with the filling in of the other.
In the preferred form of embodiment, the
4 copying composition is applied directly to the underside of the detachable form, so that the use of separate carbon papers is rendered 15' unnecessary.
Various other features and objects of the Y invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred form of embodiment thereof, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the unitary sheet which may be folded to provide thev container and superposed receipts, as will be described. p l Y `Figure 2 shows the sheet of Figure 1 fold-- ed to form the container and is also an elevation.
Figure 3 illustrates a detail of the sheetA shctnvn in Figure 1, in fragmentary rear eleva lon.
'lio
The unitary sheet shown in Figure 1 prof vides a portion 5, which forms the 'front of the completed container and which may bear` addresses, advertising, or other printed mat" ter, for this portion remams clear and unobstructed after the sheet is folded to container form.
Integral with portion 5 are 'side flaps 7 and 11. Sideap 7 forms the-back of the completed container and has printed upon it that copy of the 'receipt for. the contents of the container which is to remain with the i container. This copy'S of the receipt form 1s preferably spaced from the ends and one s1de of the aps 7 so as not to be covered by the other aps, as will be described. The prlnted forms manifestly may show such matter as may be devised. For purposes of illustration the container has been assumed to be a pay envelope and the receipt form as that usedV for such purposes.
Sidefla ll-is provided with an extension 14 which 1s preferably shorter than the flap 11, and which bears upon its face a duplicate ofthe receipt form 8, as indicated at 10.V Upon the reverse 'side of extension 14 and beneath the blank spaces in the recepit form 10 1s applied copying material 16 which ma be vany suitable composition or materia, many of which are'well known to the ree production and tranfer arts. It will be 'noted from the dotted lines in Figure 1 that thls copying material -16 extends only beneath the blank spaces of the receipt copy 10, thus effecting a considerable saving in cost and tending to retain clean records since smudging4 by careless handling is prevented.
Portion 5 hasl also integral therewith a top flap 2O and a bottom flap 22. These iaps, as wellas flap 11, are preferably lined with gum, or mucilage, so that by foldin flap 7 upon line 9, flap 11 upon line 12, an flap 22 upon line 23, and sealing these flaps, a container inenvelope form is produced as shown in Figure 2.
Folding as has just been desoribed,-brings the extension 14 over and above the flap 7 1n such manner that receipt form 10 lies directly over form 8, the blank spaces of the two registering one with the other. Thus it will b e seen that from a single piece a container bearing a non-detachable receipt form 8, and a duplicate form 10, is produced. It will also be evident that money placed within the container may be sealed in by folding downand sealing flap 20.
To make clear the improvements accomplished inga specific case, use in paying employees wages will be described.
The user simply marks the employees name, hours employed, sum enclosed, yand other pertinent data in the spaces provided on form 10, then inserts the employees wages in the container and seals the flap 20. Through the means of the copying material 16, the data is duplicated upon the receipt form 8. The `container is then ready for the lpay box and manifestly the sum within t e container cannot be tampered with, without opening the same, which would leave such trace as to be readily detected. Nor can either of the receipts be detached from the roper container without leaving evidence ofp such detachment. Con- 'y fusion of receipts is, therefore, practically impossible.
Upon receiving the envelope, the employee .simply signs his name in the proper space on receipt formV 10, this act transferringr (through material 16) a duplicate copy to the container form 8.l The paymaster then tears off extension 14 and hands the employeethe envelope which bears upon its face a duplicate in receipt form 8, of the receipt V10 which the employer retains. Thus both employee and employer are afforded a 4record which tallies correctly and by which either may check any discrepancies with the v absolute'assurance that the others record is the same as his own.
All chance for attempts, or accusations, of fraud are removed.
It will be evident that the foregoing use is but one of many possible ones, that the form of container employed is but for purpose of illustration and that by employing many other forms of container which can be formed from a single sheet, other articles varying -in bulk, and in form, may be handled with lsafety and with the assurance ofprovided with spaces wherein written rec-` ord may be made, and transfer means applied to the under surface of the flap for duplicating said written record on the form of the body portion. s
2. A one-piece record and receipt envelope comprising a front panel, a back panel, la side flap folded upon the back panel and adhesively secured to one longitudinal margin thereof, a bottom flap'folded over the back panel and adhesively secured thereto, a top flap foldable over the back anel and over the upper end of the side ap for sealing the envelope, and an extension on said side flap overlying the back panel, said extension and back panel having duplicate registered printed forms thereon, the extension being connected to the side flap along a weakene line of detachment, and being shorter than the side flap to escape the top sealing. flap and remain free thereof, said extension being coated with a transfer medium-on the side thereof next to the back panel to reproduce on the back panel matter written on the extension.
3. In an envelope, a blank having end and side flaps, one of said side flaps bearing upon its surface a record form, the secondof said side flaps being provided with an extension integral therewith and detachable therefrom, said extension bearing upon its surface a duplicate of the record form upon the first said fla and bein shorter than the `dhp of whic it forms a part to permit the end fiaps to be sealed over said flap without obstructing said detachable portlon.
4. In an envelope, a blank having-endand side flaps, one of said side flaps being provided with an extension inte al therewith and detachable therefrom, sai extension being sufficiently shorter than the flap of which it forms a part, to ermit the end flaps to be sealed over said ap without obstructing said detachable portion.
5. A device of the character described whichcomprises a container provided with a detachable ap lying upon a surface thereof, duplicate receipt forms upon said flap and upon the container surface therebeneath, and means u'pon said flap whereby impresa sions made n on it are duplicated upon the container sur ace.
