Patented July 18, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION BUSINESS FORM AND ENVELOPE 7 Claims.

This invention relates to improvements in envelopes, and more particularly to envelopes having a business form comprising a part thereof.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive article of the character described.

Another object is to provide an improvedcornbination business stationery form and envelope.

A further object is to provide an improved bank deposit envelope and record.

A further object is to provide a stationery form and envelope having greater strength and safety features than heretofore known.

A further object is to provide a stationery form and envelope adapted for a wide variety of business and commercial uses.

The general purpose of this invention is to provide improvements in mailing envelopes for business and commercial purposes, and especially of the type widely used for banking, insurance collections, and other similar types of commercial activity in which it is desirable to combine with an envelope having sufficient strength and security to provide satisfactory mailing means for checks, drafts, bonds, and other documents, a business form for indicating the nature of the transactions involved, and which may provide a record for the recipient of the envelope, and also an acknowledgment or receipt, which may be detached and returned to the sender.

An important consideration in connection with articles of this kind is maximum efficiency with which the article may be used together with simplicity of structure. A particular type of envelope illustrating improvements covering these features as described hereinbelow, is that related to banking, and I have devised a combination deposit slip and envelope for the mailing of checks to a bank and the return of a duplicate of the deposit form to the sender.

The foregoing objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring more particularly to the drawings and especially to Figs. 1 to 7, I show an envelope I5 having a main panel portion I6, a side flap II of substantially the same size and dimensions as panel iii forming the back of the envelope or a pocket, a side flap I8 for attachment to flap IT, a bottom flap I9, and the usual sealing flap 26. The side flap I8 has a gummed face 32 by which it is secured to the portion of face 21 adjacent edge 29 when the flap I! has been folded back against the inner face 22 of main panel I6. The bottom flap I9 has a narrow portion 33 which has an inner face 34 and an outer face 35, face 34 being gummed, by which it is adhesively engaged to the outer face 21 of flap I'l, after it has been folded against face 22 as already described. Flap I9 is provided with a weakened line 36 by which a business form panel 3'! is formed, the latter having

38 and 39, a form side 40 and a blank side 4i. Side 4| may, if desired, be pro vided with a carbon material for making a duplicate record.

The form side 40 is shown as having bank deposit slip indicia and spaces 42 and a name and address portion 43. Similar printed matter 42a and 43a are provided'on face 21 of flap I1 and, as will be clear, the latter will be so arranged as to register with the corresponding forms 42 and 43.

It will be apparent that the duplicate form portions 42a and 43a do not completely cover face 21, but that a border or margin extends outside thereof along

23, 28 and 29, and that sealing flap 20 has a gummed portion 44 along its free edges, which gummed portions will, when sealed, be secured to exposed face of flap I8, the outer face 35 of portion 33 of flap I9, and a strip of outer face 21 adjacent the edge 23 thereof.

It will also be apparent that panel 31 is of smallen dimensions than flap I1 and though retained under the flap 20 when sealed, is not engaged by the gummed portion 44, and that it may be removed by tearing along the line 36 after the sealing flap 29 has been torn or cut open after mailing.

In Figs. 9 to 13, I have shown a somewhat modified form of the envelope and business stationary form. The envelope a is substantially similar to the envelope l5. However, the business form panel 37a is now secured to flap I1 by weakened line 38a which corresponds to the portion 3lb of the edge 3|a of flap l1. Edge 3612 of panel 31a is now a free edge and when in position ready for mailing is along and adjacent to, but separated from the edge 36a of strip 33, which strip is now identical with flap 19.

The utility of the invention should be apparent from the foregoing description, it being clear that the pocket of the envelope may contain transmitted forms such as checks, notes, securities, or other similar matter, and the forms 42 and 43 filled out appropriately identifying the transmitted material. In the forms exemplified, the use is that of bank checks deposits wherein the deposit slip, information 42, and return address information 43 was filled out in duplicate as 42a and 43a, using either separate or integral carbon means in the well-understood manner, whereupon the flap 2|] is sealed and the envelope mailed. The recipient at the bank upon opening the envelope and removing the checks therefrom, verifies the notations on the

36 or 38a, whereupon the detached panel may be suitably endorsed and returned to the sender utilizin g the window type envelope, if desired, it being clear that the form may be suitably folded so that the addressed portion 43 will be exposed in the window opening.

The foregoing described use is typical but is not to be considered exclusive, it being clear that the envelope and forms may be used as, for instance, in mailing insurance remittances with the return receipt, the sending of funds for the payment of specifically identified bills such as electrical and gas utilities, and others which can be readily conceived.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An article of the character described comprising a main panel, a plurality of auxiliary flaps embodying a flap covering the back of the main panel and narrow flaps at the bottom and at least one end folded against the back of said main panel adhesively secured together forming a pocket, a business form panel secured to one of said flaps, and a sealing flap having gummed peripheral portions adapted to be sealed to said auxiliary flaps over the business form panel.

2. An article of the character described comprising a main panel, a plurality of auxiliary flaps folded against the back of said main panel adhesively secured together forming a pocket, a business form panel secured to one of said flaps, and a sealing flap having gummed peripheral portions adapted to be sealed to said auxiliary flaps, said business form panel being of lesser dimensions than said sealing flap, and adapted to be covered thereby.

3. An article of the character described comprising a main panel, a plurality of auxiliary flaps folded against the back of said main panel adhesively secured together forming a pocket, a business form panel secured to one of said flaps, and a sealing flap having gummed peripheral portions adapted to be sealed to said auxiliary flaps, said business form panel being of lesser dimensions than said sealing flap, and adapted to be covered thereby, the sealing portions of said sealing flap adapted to lie Without the area of said business form panel.

4. An article of the character described comprising a main panel, a plurality of flaps folded against the back of said main panel adhesively secured together forming a pocket, and a business form panel secured to one of said flaps, said business form panel having an original business form thereon and a duplicate business form on one of said flaps in registry therewith, one of said flaps constituting a sealing fiap enclosing all of said business forms.

5. A combination business form and envelope of the character described comprising a main panel, a plurality of end and bottom flaps on the main panel and folded against the back of said panel and secured together to form a pocket, one of said flaps constituting a sealing flap and covering substantially the entire area of the back of the main panel and another of said flaps also covering substantially the entire area of the back of the main panel and having a business form thereon and a marginal portion outside the business form against which the sealing fiap is adapted to be sealed, and a business form panel carried by and severable along a line of the length of said envelope and the aforesaid flap having a marginal portion within the latter and having a business form thereon.

6. An article of the character described comprising a main panel having a sealing flap of substantially the same area as the main panel, a back flap of substantially the same dimensions as the main panel folded against the back thereof and forming a pocket therewith and having a business form thereon to receive the sealing flap thereof against said main panel, and a business form panel detachably secured along an edge of one of said auxiliary flaps and adapted to be registered with said first mentioned business form and the sealing flap adapted to cover the same and the back flap outwardly of the business forms thereon.

7. An article of the character described comprising a main panel, a plurality of flaps folded against the back of said main panel adhesively secured together forming a pocket, at least one flap having a business form thereon, and a business form panel detachably secured to one of said flaps and being of less area than the main panel, and a sealing flap covering the aforesaid flaps and business form.
