Be it known that I, THOMAS D. WOOLSEY, of the city and county of' San Francisco, State of California, have invented a Bath Attachment, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to an apparatus attached to a bath-tub, whereby a bather can more readily, and with greater facility, scrub or sponge certain portions of the body, the same `consisting essentially of a brush or sponge fitted to` a traveling-frame, which, by a system of'guide-rods, lever-beam, and sprin gs for its adjustment, is made by the pulling up and down of a connecting rod or'rope to scrub or sponge the back of the bather, either when in an upright or sitting posture; the object of' my invention being to avoid the stretching and discomfort experienced in using the ordinary hand fiesh brush or sponge at present in general use for that purpose.

With reference to the drawing, T represents an Ordinary bath-tub, which is fixed against an upright planking'or wall, K K, in the usual manner. A recess, G, is made in this planking or wall K K, so that a shutter, D, fitted onto hinges h h', shall enter the same and be flush with the wall when closed. Onto this shutter D, and between slide-brackets s s, a sliding wooden plate, P, is adjusted, so as to rest ou the edge of the wood-work frame n of the bath-tub. To the top of the plate P a hinge-bracket, R, is so fixed as to hold a leverbeam, B, pivoted onto it at t', and allow of its being swung round to one side by means of the hinge m in this bracket, so as to be out of' the way of the bather when` not required for use. To each end of this lever B a rod, r r', is fitted 5 the one r at the end o being for the bather to take hold of in place of a rope, and the other, hung close to the plate P, is connected by its cross-head .f to the traveling sliding frame F by the projecting tongue j'. This frame F is shaped in the form of' a square, so as to admit of a roller` brush, L, being adjusted thereto, and is also provided with eyepieces, c e', that render it capable of being slid up and down on guide-rods g g', on its being actuated by the rods r r and lever B, while the roller-brush L is made to revolve in such upward and downward movements by means of the friction of the sheave a, forming part of it, running on one of these rods g. The ends of these guides g g are provided with eyes b b for fitting loosely to` projecting pins d d', which are fixed to the plate P and serve to retain them, but admit of their backward and forward movements. On these retaining-pins d d spiral springs t t are also so arranged that the guide rods g g may be pressed inward or outward on them during the upward or downward travel of the frame F ,'in order that this `frame carrying the rollerbrush L may be subject to the same movements, whereby such brush may, in its ascent or descent, readily adjust itself to the curves Ain a bathers back. The whole of' the frame,

guide-rods, &c., comprising this apparatus are so placed as not to project over the edge of the bath-tub T next to the wall KK. When, however, it is required for use, the lever B is brought round on the hinge-bracket R, and the bather stands upright against it, with the back to the brush, and then pulls the rod r up and down, thus effecting the scrubbing required. On the other hand, if the bather should prefer a sitting posture, and wish to have the apparatus operate within the bath, the shutter D is swung round on its hinges h h', so as to stand at right angles to the wall K K, and the plate P is lowered within the slide-brackets s s into the bath-tub T, and the scrubbing is then performed as before, the V lever B being always placed sufficiently high to clear the head of the bather.

Although the roller-brush L forms part of the invention of this bath-tub attachment described, I do not coniine myself exclusively to the use of such brush, as oneof a fiat face may also be adjusted to the slide For a sponge, as may be desired.

I claim as my inventionl. The bathers bath attachment described, consisting of the sliding frame F, with brush attachment L, guide-rods g g', springs t t on the retaining-pins d d', connecting-rods 1^ 1', with lever B on the hinge-bracket R, and slideplate P, with slide-brackets s s on the shutter D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and specified.

2. The sliding frame F, provided with the brush L, in combination with the guide-rods g g', springs and retaining-pins tt andd cl',- respectively, substantiallyr as and for the pury poses herein set forth and specified.

3. The (roller-brush L fitted to the sliding frame F, and provided with the sheave a,

which is actuated by running on the guiderod g, as described, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and specified.

4. The guide-rods g g fitted loosely to the retaining pins d d', in combination with the slide-frame F, provided with the eye-pieces e e and the springs t t', substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and specified.

5. The springs t t tted to the retainingpins d d', in combination with the eyes b b of the guide-rods g g', and sliding plate P, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and specified.
